INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) contractors plan to restrict traffic lanes on I-465 during overnight hours this week to replace traffic sensors in the roadway. The work is weather dependent, and the following schedule is subject to change:

Tuesday, June 18:

The two right lanes of northbound I-465 will be restricted from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. (mile marker 42.5) between I-70 and Pendleton Pike on the east side. Three lanes will be restricted from midnight to 5 a.m.
The right three lanes of northbound I-465 will be restricted from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. (at mile marker 15) approaching Exit 16 to I-74, U.S. 136 and Crawfordsville Road on the west side.

Wednesday, June 19:

The two left lanes of southbound I-465 will be restricted from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. (at mile marker 42.5) between Pendleton Pike and I-70 on the east side. Three lanes will be restricted from midnight to 5 a.m.

Thursday, June 20:

The right two lanes of southbound I-465 will be restricted from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. (at mile marker 42.5) between Pendleton Pike and I-70 on the east side. Three lanes will be restricted from midnight to 5 a.m.

Crews will replace sensors in each lane that are used to continuously collect data, such as vehicle size and traffic volumes. This work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled in the event of rain.

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.—The Indiana Department of Transportation will make scheduled repairs to Interstate 74 this weekend—beginning Friday night at 9 o’clock, weather permitting—between Indianapolis and Shelbyville. Motorists will encounter a right lane closure along eastbound I-74 from mile marker 105.0 to mile marker 109.0 (Fairland exit).

Reith Riley—the contractor for a state repair contract calling for full-depth concrete patching, partial-depth asphalt patching, undersealing and crack sealing on I-74—plans to saw cut, remove and replace sections of failed concrete pavement. Full-depth concrete patches in the eastbound right lane will be up to 66 feet in length.

Restrictions should be lifted by 5 p.m. Sunday, allowing time for new concrete to cure.

Contractors Plan Lane Restrictions
For Operation Indy Commute I-69

FISHERS, Ind. – Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) contractors are planning overnight lane restrictions this week as part of Operation Indy Commute – I-69.

Rieth-Riley Construction, the INDOT contractor for the $11 million added travel lanes project, plans northbound and southbound left lane restrictions between 96^th Street and 116^th Street to begin subgrade treatment tonight, Tuesday and Wednesday nights from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Rieth-Riley is constructing an additional travel lane along southbound I-69 between 116^th Street and I-465. Auxiliary lanes will be built to connect northbound and southbound interchange ramps between 116^th, 96^th and 82^nd streets.

Milestone Contractors, the state’s contractor for the $18 million interchange improvement project at Exit 205, plans alternating lane restrictions for paving on northbound I-69 between the State Road 37 flyover and Cumberland Road on Tuesday and Wednesday nights from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

All improvements on both contracts are expected to be complete by the end of this year.

U.S. 50 Lawrenceville Bridge Hearing June 25 (6/19/2013 - 6/20/2013)

LAWRENCEBURG, Ind.—The Indiana Department of Transportation has scheduled a public hearing to present preliminary engineering plans and provide opportunities for public comment regarding a proposed U.S. Highway 50 bridge replacement over Tanners Creek, a service road and resurfacing of U.S. 50 from the east side of the bridge to just west of the Central Railroad crossing at Lawrenceburg.

The hearing is slated to begin at 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, June 25, at the Lawrenceburg Fire Department building located at 300 W. Tate Street.

The existing US 50 Tanners Creek bridge is a 5-span continuous riveted plate girder structure built in 1936. It is deemed “historic”, but “non-select.” Information about the bridge can be found at: http://www.in.gov/indot/2919.htm.

Preliminary plans call for rehabilitating and widening the bridge. The deck and beams would be removed and replaced, existing piers and abutments repaired and widened to accommodate four 12-foot travel lanes and a 13-foot sidewalk on the south side.

A tentative timetable for right‑of‑way acquisition and construction will be discussed, followed by public statements that will be recorded for consideration prior to developing a final engineering design. Preliminary plans can be viewed at:

Frye Road Overpass work will restrict lanes on I-70

Restrictions begin today approximately two miles east of Exit 11

VIGO COUNTY, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announces the Frye Road Overpass construction will restrict the left lane on I-70 between the 13 and 14 mile marker. This lane restriction will be in effect for 24 hours a day for approximately two weeks.

The contract was awarded to Halverson Construction Co., Inc. from Springfield, IL for $317,166. This bridge was closed to traffic in September of last year after a piece of construction equipment struck and damaged the bridge. This bridge rehabilitation project will replace three damaged beams and portions of the deck. The work is scheduled for completion by July 19.

State Road 47 Chip Seal Project begins Wednesday

Motorists should drive slowly and use caution in this area

MONTGOMERY/PARKE COUNTIES, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announces maintenance crews will begin a pavement preservation project on State Road 47 (S.R. 47) on or after Wednesday, June 19. S.R. 47 from US 41 to County Road 600 South (New Market Road) will be chip sealed.

Traffic will be controlled by arrow boards and flagmen in the area they will be working. Work on the roadway is scheduled to last through Wednesday, July 3. The work schedule is subject to change in the event of inclement weather.

The chip-seal process consists of distributing a liquid asphalt emulsion on the roadway and covering the liquid asphalt with crushed stone to provide a new wearing surface. Chip-sealing extends the life of a roadway by protecting it from moisture, ultra-violet degradation and any other exposures that could damage a roadway.

Drivers should exercise caution during the construction of these projects. Loose stone will be present on the roadway during the initial cure of the asphalt and can damage windshields and paint on vehicles following each other too closely. It is recommended when travelling on a recently chip-sealed road to slow down and allow additional space between vehicles.

The fog seal is being applied on top of the chip-seal work. The fog seal is a light application of asphalt material that can lock in loose stone and help with dust problems. It also makes the road black, which makes pavement markings more visible.

7 p.m.-11 p.m. Wednesday in New Albany. Guardrail replacement along the Spring Street on-ramp to eastbound Interstate 64 (just west of the Sherman Minton bridge). The ramp will remain open during removal and replacement operations.
Midnight Wednesday-3 a.m. Thursday in Jeffersonville. Replacement of the guardrail attenuator section on the left side of the northbound I-65 offramp to Court Avenue (Exit 0, just north of the Kennedy Bridge). The ramp will remain open to traffic during repair operations.

BEDFORD, Ind.—The Indiana Department of Transportation is switching single lane traffic on U.S. Highway 50 at the Back Creek bridge—1.89 miles east of State Road 446 in Lawrence County—to the north side of the structure today. The change in traffic pattern will allow construction crews to work on the south half of the bridge.

Ragle Construction is the state’s contractor for this bridge deck overlay project.

Temporary signals have controlled one-lane-at-a-time traffic crossing the 200-foot concrete structure located near C.R. 950 East on U.S. 50 since April. INDOT anticipates normalizing two-way traffic in September.

AUBURN, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Transportation announces that SR 8 (E. 7th Street) in Auburn will have daily closures between Union Street and Duesenberg Drive until early July. The closures are due to water main work, and the restriction will lift each night after 5pm.

The daytime detour follows Grandstaff Drive to Auburn Drive to Amstutz Road. Access is available to local businesses on SR 8 via Auburn city streets.

Motorists should expect minimal delays

SHELBURN, Ind. –The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is announcing lane restrictions for U.S. Route 41 in Sullivan County next week. Motorist will have a change in their normal commute as the railroad company will be making repairs to the rail crossing 1.2 miles north of Shelburn.

Work at this location will begin on Monday, June 24, at approximately 8:00 a.m. Railroad crews will close one lane of traffic at a time, while a minimum of one lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained at all times. Repairs to the crossing are anticipated to be complete by late evening on Friday, June 28, weather permitting.

SPENCER, Ind.—The Indiana Department of Transportation plans to shift State Road 46 traffic at the Monroe-Owen County Line Road—four miles east of Spencer—Tuesday (JUNE 18), weather permitting. Motorists will be routed 22 feet to the north of existing lanes, allowing construction crews to work on the south side of a project designed to correct sight distance concerns.

Tuesday’s traffic shift will remain in effect for up to three months. Speed limits will be reduced to 45 mph through the construction zone.

Milestone, the state’s contractor for this $2.8 million sight distance improvement project, is building nearly one mile of new S.R. 46 roadway to accommodate 12-foot lanes with 8-foot shoulders. A hill along the route that obstructs line-of-sight vision is being lowered.

INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) contractors plan to repair pavement this weekend on I-70 west of I-65 (south split) to I-465.

E & B Paving, the state’s contractor for the $1.2 million pavement restoration project, will restrict the left and center lanes of westbound I-70 from I-65 (south split) west to I-465 beginning at 9 p.m. Friday. E & B will also restrict the left lane of eastbound I-70 between I-465 and I-65 (south split) beginning at 9 p.m. Friday.

The lanes are expected to remain closed until Sunday, June 16 at approximately 2 p.m. The extended restriction will allow new concrete adequate time to cure.

Weekend lane restrictions for pavement replacement and sealing are expected to continue for approximately two months. Repairs will be made to both eastbound and westbound I-70. Work is weather-dependent and will be rescheduled in the event of rain.

U.S. 31 Ramp to Keystone
Closes Tomorrow Night
For Weekend Repairs

HAMILTON COUNTY – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has requested contractors temporarily close the southbound U.S. 31 ramp to Keystone Parkway in order to replace sections of concrete pavement not meeting INDOT quality standards.

The ramp is scheduled to close tomorrow (Friday, June 14) at 9 p.m. and is expected to reopen before Monday, June 17 at 6 a.m. This schedule will be postponed in the event of inclement weather.

INDOT and Walsh Construction, the state’s contractor for the $35 million U.S. 31 Hamilton County project, over the past few weeks have been repairing areas of concrete where premature surface cracking was identified. The ramp repairs are the final areas identified as requiring concrete replacement.

Lane Restriction Tonight to Set Bridge Beams

The right lane of southbound U.S. 31 will be restricted between 156^th Street and Union Street tonight beginning at 9 p.m. as contractors place beams at the bridge over Cool Creek. The lane is expected to reopen by 6 a.m.

GREENFIELD, Ind.—A change in the traffic pattern on Interstate 70 will take place Monday night (JUNE 17) in Hancock County between mile markers 96.8 and 100.6.

The Indiana Department of Transportation plans to route eastbound I-70’s left lane (passing lane) on the south side of the roadway—via a median crossover—to the inside “westbound” lane on the north side of the roadway. Eastbound I-70 right-lane traffic will continue in its current pattern.

Trucks will be prohibited from using the eastbound I-70 passing lane through this 4-mile section of construction zone. Meanwhile, a 13-foot width restriction and a reduction in speed limit to 55 mph will be enforced.

Milestone, the state’s contractor for this $15.2 million I-70 Major Moves reconstruction project from Mt. Comfort Road to State Road 9, will place concrete barriers at 9 p.m. Monday at crossovers and along the inside north-side lane separating bi-directional traffic.

The 8.5 mile I-70 project is replacing concrete pavement in eastbound lanes—with repairs and resurfacing in the eastbound asphalt section. Westbound I-70’s concrete section is being extensively patched—with the asphalt section repaired and resurfaced. In addition, the Sugar Creek bridge is being widened and the westbound on-ramp at S.R. 9 lengthened.

Guardrail Repair Monday Night

The state’s contractor will coordinate Monday night’s work to include repair of a guardrail at the 100.4 mile marker along westbound I-70. Those repairs should be complete by 6 a.m. Tuesday.

ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announces rolling slowdowns of traffic on southbound I-69 will take place during nighttime hours next week, between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., beginning Sunday night, June 16, near mile 304. The slowdowns are to accommodate the placement of bridge beams on the Covington Road Bridge over I-69 at this location. Later in the week, northbound I-69 will experience rolling slowdowns in this area, as well.

On Sunday night, June 16, after 9 p.m., traffic on southbound I-69 will be intermittently slowed to 10 mph as beams are placed on the bridge. The Allen County Sheriff’s Department will assist with the rolling slowdowns, which may last up to 20 minutes each. Work is expected to take place over the southbound lanes up to, and possibly including, Tuesday night, June 18, weather permitting.

Beginning Tuesday night, June 18, or Wednesday night, June 19, work on the bridge will shift to take place over the northbound I-69 lanes. At this time, the rolling slowdowns will occur for northbound I-69 traffic. All slowdowns will be completed by 5 a.m. each morning. The bridge beam placement work is expected to be complete by 5 a.m. on Friday morning, June 21, weather permitting.

Motorists may wish to select alternate routes and/or plan accordingly for possible traffic delays on I-69.

The Covington Road bridge work includes bridge deck replacement and widening. The work entails removing the existing deck and railing down to the bridge beams; constructing wider bridge piers in the median of I-69 and along the outside shoulders of northbound and southbound I-69; and installing additional new bridge beams for a wider deck. The wider deck will allow for wider shoulders and additional width to accommodate the proposed Covington Road Trail, crossing over I-69. The adjacent portion of Covington Road work is part of the bridge contract. It will involve improvements at the Covington Road / Dicke Road intersection, including the installation of a new traffic signal.

The project was awarded to Primco based on the low bid of $2.4 million. The entire project is scheduled to be complete in the late fall of 2013.

AUSTIN, Ind.—U.S. Highway 31 traffic patterns will be altered at two locations in the Austin area—beginning Monday morning.

A culvert replacement project at the Austin Ditch will shift traffic lanes to the west side of the highway. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained—one northbound, one southbound—but an 11-foot width restriction is being imposed. This work is scheduled to be complete by July 26.

Just south of the Austin Ditch (0.56 miles south of State Road 256), a district bridge project at Hutto Creek is closing one lane of U.S. 31—allowing one-lane-at-a-time to cross the bridge. Traffic movements will be controlled by a temporary signal. One half of the bridge is being removed and rebuilt at a time. Width restrictions are 12-feet. Traffic restrictions are expected to continue into late September.

CLARKSVILLE, Ind.—The Indiana Department of Transportation will close Interstate 65 lanes in Clark County again this weekend for emergency patching. Closures begin at 9 p.m. Friday and continue through Saturday afternoon. Locations are:

I-65 southbound right lane between mile markers 20.0 and 18.2

INDOT anticipates traffic backups between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday. Motorists are advised to make travel plans accordingly. U.S. Highway 31 should be a viable alternative. It can be accessed from Exits 14, 19 and 29.

Gohmann Construction, the state’s contractor, will remove and replace sections of deteriorating pavement. Once concrete has been poured, it takes about 20 hours for curing before traffic can be returned to the lanes.

COLUMBUS, Ind.—Indiana Department of Transportation maintenance personnel from the Columbus Subdistrict are scheduled to chip seal State Road 11 south of Columbus next week. Flaggers will direct motorists around moving worksites.

Beginning Tuesday morning—weather permitting—INDOT crews will chip seal 16.2 lane miles of S.R. 11 from the I-65 off-ramp at mile marker 55.0 (Cypress Lake) north to C.R. 450 South (Southern Crossing). This surface treatment operation should continue through Tuesday.

First, liquid asphalt will be applied to the roadway. Then, small chips of limestone aggregate will be placed on top. This seals the pavement against moisture and ultraviolet rays, extending service life—and it restores surface friction, improving skid resistance.

On Wednesday, crews will retrace the S.R. 11 route—applying fog seal. Fog seal further seals the roadway from moisture and secures loose aggregate while dampening dust.

This kind of pavement preservation procedure is extremely cost-effective. Studies show that every $1 spent on chip seal applications saves $10 in road repairs.

INDOT strongly advises motorists to drive with caution on roads where chip seal is being applied. Tires can kick up freshly sprayed asphalt and loose stone which might cause damage to vehicles.

GARY, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announces the closure of U.S. 12/U.S. 20 at the railroad crossing a half mile west of the I-65 interchange beginning Monday, June 17^th through Friday, June 21^st. Crews will be repairing the railroad crossing.

Drivers wishing to travel west on U.S. 12/20 will follow a detour south on I-65, west on I-80/94, north on SR 53, and back to U.S. 12/20. Drivers wishing to travel east on U.S. 12/20 will travel south on SR 53, east on I-80/94, north on I-65, and back to U.S. 12/20.

HUNTINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announces that SR 5 at CR 500N, between US 24 and SR 16, north of Huntington, is closed to accommodate replacement of a small structure over Clear Creek.

The detour is US 24 to SR 9 to SR 114 to SR 5. The road is expected to re-open in late July, weather permitting.

The contract for the project was awarded to Brooks Construction, based on the low bid of $599,000.

Crack Down Continues on Wabash Bridge Toll Violations

MT. VERNON, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) continues to crack down on toll violators on the Wabash Memorial Toll Bridge. Thus far 30 drivers have been summoned to Posey County Traffic Court and face fines and court costs in addition to back tolls owed.

Each time drivers cross the Wabash Bridge without paying a toll, they are committing a Class C traffic infraction punishable with $220 in fines and court costs. INDOT is calling habitual violators and sending certified letters in an effort to establish payment plans and avoid sending the cases to the Posey County Prosecutor. To date 63 payment plans have been established and 23 customers are now fully paid.

Many violators have refused to return INDOT’s calls or sign for certified letters. Time is limited for these drivers to set up a payment plan as they will be referred to the Prosecutor in the near future. Wabash Bridge users who wish to pay off outstanding balances and avoid fees and citations should call INDOT at 317-232-5385 to set up a payment plan.

Drivers crossing the Wabash Memorial Toll Bridge connecting Illinois 141 with Indiana 62 are required to maintain a prepaid Wabash Pass account and affix an associated transponder tag to their vehicle’s front windshield. Electronic tolls are 50 cents for cars, 30 cents for motorcycles or bicycles and $1.70 for six-axle trucks. Tolls have not been increased since 1984, and pay for continued maintenance and eventual replacement of the bridge, which opened in 1956.

Roadside displays have been relocated to better tell Wabash Pass account holders “Thank You” when their pre-paid account is charged or “Low Balance” when funds are running low.
