[s30] Legislation Pausing Common Core Implementation Passes Senate Committee

Entry Description
STATEHOUSE (Feb. 13, 2013) – Legislation authored by State Sen. Scott Schneider (R-Indianapolis) suspending Indiana’s implementation of Common Core State Standards passed the Senate Education and Career Development Committee on Wednesday by a vote of 7-4.

Senate Bill 193 would halt the implementation of Common Core until the Indiana Board of Education holds a series of public hearings statewide to determine the best educational standards for Indiana schoolchildren.

“Common Core was developed without the public dialogue we saw in drafting our state’s very high standards,” Schneider said. “By placing Common Core implementation on pause, we can take the time to discuss what standards we should be using for Hoosier students and hear from Indiana parents, teachers and communities. This process maintains our current method for adopting standards without giving up control to the federal government or national groups.”

SB 193 received a lengthy Senate committee hearing on Jan. 16, where parents, education leaders and subject-matter experts testified both in support and opposition to implementing Common Core in Indiana.

“Indiana has academic standards that are nationally recognized,” Schneider said. “In subjects such as language arts and math, Hoosier students have the advantage of high expectations. I look forward to seeing what direction the Board of Education takes after gathering public input later this year.”

SB 193 also calls for the Office of Management and Budget to conduct analysis of the cost associated with implementing the Common Core State Standards.

The bill will now move to the full Senate for further consideration.

The Board of Education voted to adopt Common Core as the state’s new K-12 academic standards in 2010.  It is currently being implemented in Indiana kindergarten and first grade classrooms.
