Entry Description STATEHOUSE (Jan. 2, 2013) – State Sen. Scott Schneider (R-Indianapolis) has filed legislation for the General Assembly’s 2013 session to withdraw Indiana from the Common Core State Standards.
In 2010, the State Board of Education voted to adopt the Common Core State Standards as Indiana’s new academic standards for K-12 schools. Many states began implementing the Common Core Standards after the Obama administration included their adoption as one of the criteria it would consider in determining which states receive federal “Race to the Top” grant money.
“Many Hoosiers, including myself, are concerned that adopting the Common Core Standards was a significant step backward from the nationally recognized education standards Indiana previously had in English and math,” Schneider said. “I am worried that Common Core was pushed on Indiana without proper review of what it will mean for students and teachers.”
Instead, Schneider recommends that Indiana should maintain state-crafted school standards that emphasize local input.
“With my legislation, we are giving a voice back to Hoosier parents, teachers and educational leaders who feel lost in the national push for Common Core,” Schneider said.
The bill is expected to be heard in the Senate Committee on Education and Career Development on Jan. 16.
