House Republicans release committee appointments

STATEHOUSE— House Speaker Brian C. Bosma (R-Indianapolis) announced committee assignments and leadership appointments for the Indiana House Republican Caucus.  Rep. Bill Friend (R-Macy) will continue to serve as the Majority Floor Leader for the Caucus and will be a member of the Statutory Committee on Interstate and International Cooperation, Agriculture and Rural Development and Environmental Affairs.

Committee chairmen and caucus leaders are selected biennially by the majority party after each election year. The House Floor Majority Leader serves as an advisor and counselor for the caucus by working with all of the members on any issues that arise. Rep. Friend’s leadership role also helps the Speaker of the House address daily matters.

“In an effort to promote greater civility and bipartisanship, I was glad to see both parties represented to lead committees in chairmanship roles again. All of the committee chairmen announced today are strong and knowledgeable leaders in their respective fields,” said Rep. Friend. “The committees are truly the workhorses of the Legislature as they get into the weeds on critical issues for the betterment of Indiana.”

Standing committees are an integral part of the legislative process.  Committees with specific expertise receive public testimony and work out the details of proposed legislation before it is heard on the House floor.

Speaker Bosma appointed Representative Steve Stemler (D-Jeffersonville) to be the Chair of the Select Committee on Government Reduction. This is the second time the Speaker has made such a bold bipartisan move. In 2010, Speaker Bosma broke 194 years of tradition and reached across the aisle to appoint a Democrat to this position.

“We are preparing a new generation of legislative leadership in Indiana, armed to deal with today’s critical problems. Our constituents expect us to work together, and I assure Hoosiers that we will,” said Bosma.
