Entry Description

INDIANAPOLIS—For the first time, Indiana has been chosen for the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) State Honor Roll.

The State Honor Roll of Asthma and Allergy Policies for schools is a yearly research project of the AAFA to identify states with the most comprehensive and preferred statewide public policies supporting people with asthma, food allergies, anaphylaxis risk and related allergic diseases in U.S. elementary, middle and high schools.  The report helps identify state-level progress towards better school-based policies, and to provide a blueprint for asthma and allergy advocates nationwide.

Besides Indiana, six other states and the District of Columbia were chosen this year.  Indiana met 15 of 18 AAFA core policy standards and 10 of 15 extra credit indicators to qualify for the selection.  Indiana also met all seven of the core policies under the topic of school environment.  They are:

·        Mandate that all schools must have indoor air quality (IAQ) management policies

·        Adopt policy requiring that districts and schools conduct periodic inspections

·        State has IAQ policies that include specific components important in asthma/allergy management

·        State requires schools to notify parents of upcoming pesticide applications

·        All smoking prohibited in school buildings and on school grounds

·        All smoking prohibited on school buses and at school-related functions

·        Tobacco use prevention is required in health education curriculum

Last year, Indiana met 13 of 18 core policy standards and seven of 15 extra credit indicators.  This year’s score was a marked improvement for Indiana, which was the only Midwestern state selected.

Help in achieving this honor came in 2010 when Indiana enacted a law aimed at helping schools improve indoor air quality.  The Indiana State Department of Health and the Indiana Department of Education work jointly to provide asthma management training for school nurses and training for school indoor air quality coordinators.
