Entry Description
Reduced diesel fuel consumption, emissions will benefit public health
Over $1 million in grants are now available to encourage diesel emission reduction projects in Indiana. Through the DieselWise Indiana initiative, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) is offering two separate grant opportunities to public and private entities to offset the costs of implementing technology to reduce diesel emissions.
The grant awards are expected to range from $10,000 to $200,000, and the intended use of the grants may require a match from the entity receiving the grant.
The funding source for one grant opportunity requires the grant money to be used to reduce vehicle emissions in Northern Indiana. The other grant opportunity will provide funds to lower emissions from diesel equipment anywhere in the state. The effect of diesel emissions on air quality and human health is a concern in urban and rural areas in Indiana.
“Motor vehicles, including diesel and gasoline engines, are the number one source of emissions that create ozone and fine particulate matter,” said IDEM Commissioner Thomas Easterly. “These grants will help keep Indiana’s diesel vehicles modern, competitive and efficient. All three of those things will make Indiana a better place to live.”
In the past seven years, IDEM’s DieselWise Indiana initiative has administered over $4 million in grant monies to improve over 2,600 vehicles. Visit the DieselWise website at www.idem.IN.gov/5255.htm to learn more about the grant application process.
