Entry Description Today Lt. Governor Becky Skillman presented the 2012 AgriVision Award to Kip Tom, Managing Member of Tom Farms in Kosciusko County at the Celebration of Agriculture event in the Normandy Barn at the Indiana State Fair.
The Award, now in its sixth year, is given to a Hoosier who has demonstrated exemplary leadership to maximize the potential of Indiana agriculture.
“Kip’s vision and innovative spirit are what the AgriVision Award represents,” Lt. Governor Skillman said. “He has led the growth of Tom Farms, taking the family business from its very conservative and traditional beginnings beginning in 1950 to an early adapter of more aggressive business principles and technologies in the industry today. Because of Kip’s vision, his family business is the leader in seed corn production and provides services globally to Monsanto and DuPont.”
A life-long resident of Kosciusko County, Indiana, Kip Tom grew up on his family’s farm in the community his ancestors homesteaded in 1837. Kip raised his own family on this same farm. Today his family’s business is a leader in agriculture production globally. Tom Farms’ seed corn production operations include those in the United States and Argentina. Tom Farms also provides products and services to various other Indiana companies such as Red Gold. Kip serves on the Board of Directors of the Indiana Economic Development Corporation serving with Governor Mitch Daniels. He also serves as and advisor to the Indiana Department of Agriculture (ISDA) and is a member of the ISDA Indiana Grown program.
Also at the Celebration of Agriculture, the Purdue Women in Agriculture Awards were presented. This year’s recipients were:
• 2012 Leadership Award Winner: LuAnn Troxel. LuAnn Troxel is the owner of Troxel Dairy Farm, along with husband, Dr. Tom Troxel, where they milk 130 Holstein cows twice daily and farm 220 acres in LaPorte and Starke counties.
• 2012 Achievement Award Winner: Tammi Unger. Tammi Unger has been a full partner and co-owner of Del Unger Farms since 1984. Tammi has been an integral part of the family farming operation over the last 28 years. Since 1984, the farming operation has grown from 1200 acres to 4500 acres today.
And the Lt. Governor honored and extended congratulations to the 2012 ISDA Photo Contest winners. To view the winning photos, go to the ISDA Facebook page.
In addition, ISDA surprised Lt. Governor Becky Skillman with a sterling silver corn stalk brooch custom made by Windsor Jewelry in downtown Indianapolis as a token of the Department’s appreciation for her leadership and service. No state funds were used.
