National Governor’s Association cites two Arts

Commission related projects in national report

(Indianapolis, Indiana) – The Indiana Arts Commission (IAC) announced today that Indiana has been highlighted in a national report on how states can use arts, culture and design as a means to enhance economic growth.

The National Governors Association (NGA) recently released a new publication, New Engines of Growth: Five Roles for Arts, Culture and Design. The report, prepared in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies (NASAA) focuses on the role that arts, culture, and design can play in assisting states as they seek to create jobs, boost their economies and, over time, transition to an innovation-based economy.

Indiana and projects spearheaded by the Indiana Arts Commission are among state arts agencies acknowledged throughout the report as having established many of the featured programs and policies that embrace the strategies listed in the report.

Specifically, Indiana’s Cultural Districts program is among five state designated programs featured out of 12 states nationwide with similar programs. Indiana is also mentioned among states that have developed programs to help artists raise the market profile of their traditional crafts and export them across state lines. This citation is in reference to the Indiana Artisan Program.

“The Indiana General Assembly and Governor Daniels recognized the importance of these two initiatives and their potential impact for economic and community development, cultural tourism, and helping Hoosier artists market and export their work,” said IAC Executive Director Lewis C. Ricci. “It is important that Indiana receives this level of national recognition for the vision of our state’s leadership and their commitment to the arts and culture of our state as important economic development tools.”

The Cultural Districts program provides official state designation to arts-focused community development programs. Indiana Artisan, a pilot program developed by the IAC, Indiana Office of Tourism, Department of Agriculture, and the Office of Rural and Community Affairs, is now an independent non-profit statewide organization which brands and helps market high quality, Indiana artwork, fine crafts, and value added foods.

The NGA report identifies five ways in which arts, culture and design can assist states with economic growth. Those key strategies include: providing fast-growth, dynamic industry clusters; helping mature industries become more competitive; providing critical ingredients for innovative places; catalyzing community revitalization; and delivering a better-prepared workforce.

The new report contains many quotes and key findings that can help strengthen the case for the value of the arts, state arts agencies, and arts advocates as partners in fostering economic vitality, boosting tourism and developing a competitive workforce.

The National Governors Association, a bipartisan organization of the nation’s governors, promotes visionary state leadership, shares best practices and speaks with a collective voice on national policy.

The Indiana Arts Commission is committed to the vision of the arts everywhere, every day, for everyone in Indiana.
