Entry Description
Wrapping paper, electronics, and Christmas trees can be recycled
Holiday gifts are a great way to show people you care about them, but they also generate a lot of trash. Indiana’s Solid Waste Management Districts (SWMDs) are prepared to help Hoosiers recycle Christmas trees, wrapping paper, electronics and other items this holiday season.
Around 75 percent of waste generated can be recycled. However, a lot of those valuable resources are thrown away and now take up space in landfills. Indiana’s SWMDs organize convenient drop-off locations and schedule special collection events to recycle Indiana’s holiday waste.
A large amount of paper is used during the holidays. Many types of wrapping paper, greeting cards and boxes can be recycled with other paper products. Metallic, sparkly or other special paper may not be recyclable. Items like gift bags, boxes and tissue paper can be used multiple times before they are recycled.
Electronic items are no longer allowed in normal trash. E-waste collection sites are available across the state to recycle the valuable materials in the electronics. Don’t forget to recycle cords, memory sticks, docking stations and other accessories that go with electronic devices.
Real Christmas trees can be ground into mulch or cut into wood chips. These natural wood products are spread around flower beds, on hiking trails and under playground equipment. Remember to remove all ornaments, lights, tinsel and other man-made objects before taking the tree to designated drop-off locations.
Finally, recycle steel and aluminum cans and plastic and glass bottles from parties. Consider buying larger containers to reduce packaging.
To find a nearby recycling location and what type of recyclables can be accepted, visit www.recycle.IN.gov. The website has the contact information for Indiana’s SWMDs, who can answer questions from the public.
