Local Student Receives National JAG Scholarship

JAG Program assists high school students with earning diploma, achieving employability skills

INDIANAPOLIS (July 17, 2015)Indiana Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) student, Elijah White was one of 14 students from across the nation to receive the Kenneth M. Smith Scholarship this week at JAG’s National Training Seminar in New Orleans. White is a recent graduate of Riley High School, who plans to use the scholarship to pursue a degree in Business Management at Indiana University.

White’s career aspirations are a result of a meaningful summer internship at a local luxury car dealership. The skills White perfected in his JAG classroom allowed him to be a part of numerous business meetings and presentations which resulted in a multifaceted internship. Both school personnel and business colleagues acknowledge his character, work ethic and willingness to assist others.

“Elijah was named Indiana’s Outstanding JAG Senior this year and has served as a tireless ambassador and advocate for the program,” said Steven J. Braun, Commissioner of the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. “Indiana’s JAG program is the largest in the nation and can boast of many accomplished students who are determined to succeed.”

JAG is a state-based national non-profit dedicated to reconnecting at risk students academically by helping them overcome barriers to graduation. Since 2006, Indiana’s JAG program has helped more than 13,000 Hoosier students stay in school through graduation, pursue post-secondary education and secure quality jobs leading to career advancement. Currently, more than 5,500 students participate in JAG through 118 programs located throughout Indiana.

Currently, more than 5,500 students participate in JAG through 118 active programs located throughout Indiana. Students are taught competencies, such as critical thinking, team leadership and effective communications skills that will increase their marketability. JAG students receive adult mentoring while in school and one year of follow-up counseling after graduation.  Indiana’s program graduates more than 93% percent of participants and many students choose to continue their education after high school.

Indiana’s state JAG program was also nationally recognized for its success, achieving the “5 of 5” award marking 90% graduation rates, job/college placements for students, and outstanding community service.  Several school programs achieved a 100% graduation rate.  The JAG program is funded through grants provided by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.
