[DCS]Miami County DCS Recruiting Foster Parents: Informational Meetings set during Child Abuse Prevention Month
Start Date: 4/1/2014Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 4/1/2014
Entry Description

PERU, Ind. (April 1, 2014)—The Miami County office of the Indiana Department of Child Services (DCS) is always looking for adults with a strong desire to invest in the future. These potential foster parents are selfless caregivers willing to provide temporary supervision and stability for foster children during a challenging time in the children’s lives. Since April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, the Miami County DCS office has scheduled three informational meetings for prospective foster parents on Saturday, April 12 in Peru.

“While the best place for children to grow up is with their own families, if an innocent child is abused or neglected and it’s not safe for the child to stay in their own home, our first choice is always to place them with relatives,” said Kay McInnis, director of the Miami County DCS office. “But if a fit and willing relative is not available, we need to have good foster parents ready to step up and temporarily help a child in need.”

Foster parents can be stay-at-home parents or they can work outside the home. They may rent or own their own house, apartment or condominium, as long as it meets safety standards. Besides providing food and shelter, they assist with practical needs like helping with visits with the child’s family, taking them to any needed therapy sessions, medical and other appointments and ensuring there are extra-curricular activities.

Local foster parents are especially needed so school-age children removed from their homes can continue to attend their own school and maintain contact with their friends. Those willing to foster teenagers or sibling groups are particularly desired.

Each informational meeting will be led by foster care specialists from the Miami County DCS office. Foster parent responsibilities will be discussed as well as the licensing process, including the home study. In addition, a licensed foster parent will be on hand to answer questions. A willingness to step up and help a child in need is the most important prerequisite for becoming a foster parent.

The April 12 informational meetings will take place at the Miami County DCS office, 12 South Wabash Street in Peru. Thirty-minute meetings will begin at 10 am, 10:45 am and 11:30 am.

To help increase awareness about child abuse prevention during National Child Abuse Prevention Month, the Miami County DCS office is coordinating a special event April 8 at 10 am at the Miami County DCS office. Blue ribbons and candy will be distributed to community agencies. Since 1989, the blue ribbon has become a national symbol for child abuse and serves as a reminder of our need to protect children.

There are more than 4,700 abused or neglected Hoosier children currently living in non-relative foster homes because it is unsafe for them to live in their own homes. In Miami County, 36 abused or neglected children live in foster homes.
