[LIBRARY] Release: Indiana Libraries Partner to Honor Hoosier Veterans & Families
Start Date: 11/8/2013Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 11/8/2013End Time: 11:59 PM
Entry Description

INDIANAPOLIS (November 8, 2013) – Hoosiers have an opportunity to honor loved ones that served in past and present wars, conflicts or peacetime operations. The Indiana State Library and public libraries across the state are honoring military members, veterans and their families by participating in the annual Our Heroes' Tree program. Through this program, Indiana libraries also try to create awareness of military families currently affected by deployment.

To participate in Our Heroes’ Tree, simply bring a scanned photo of the service member from past and present wars, conflicts or peacetime operations to a local participating library. Library staff will have materials, and possibly scanning units, to help you construct your ornament that will be placed on the tree with other commemorative ornaments. Please contact your local library for dates the Our Heroes’ Tree will be in public view in your community. Indianapolis residents are welcome to hang an ornament on the State Library’s Our Heroes' tree during regular business hours November 8th through December 20th.

“This noteworthy program promotes patriotism throughout Indiana communities via their local public library,” said Roberta L. Brooker, State Librarian of Indiana. “Libraries are often the educational and entertainment hubs of the community, which makes them ideal locations to share memories of our military heroes.”

 About Our Heroes Tree (www.ourheroestree.com)
Our Heroes’ Tree is a national program founded to recognize and honor the sacrifices of current service members, veterans, and deceased service members. Participating libraries will display a tree featuring handmade ornaments created by community members to honor a service member. Libraries will also offer resources to help these communities provide support and generate a greater understanding of the experiences of servicemen and women and their families.

About the Indiana State Library (www.library.in.gov)
The Indiana State Library was established in 1825 to provide library services to Indiana’s state governmental officials and employees. Since that time, the responsibilities of the State Library have expanded to provide services to all citizens of Indiana. Just as the Library of Congress serves as the historical repository for our nation, the State Library is responsible for collecting and preserving all types of information and data about the state of Indiana.

Everyone is welcome to visit the State Library. Our professional staff is available to assist with research questions, offer expertise on a variety of subject matters, including genealogy, and provide general guidance and information about materials in the Library’s collections.
