Entry Description

Batesville schools received some pretty exciting news recently, and they all deserve a round of applause. With the release of the ISTEP+ scores, we learned that the Batesville Community School Corporation (BCSC) is No. 6 in the state for the percentage of students passing both the English/Language Arts and Mathematics portions of the exam!

Even when separating the results into the two categories, BCSC ranks No. 10 in the percentage of students passing the English/Language arts portion and No. 3 in the Mathematics portion out of the nearly 300 school corporations in Indiana.

There are two parts to this success. The first, of course, is the students. They deserve a lot of recognition and congratulations for all their hard work in learning all the knowledge necessary to do well on these tests. Taking intensive exams can be stressful and pressure-filled, but they are a critical component to gauging a student’s learning capabilities and ensuring they are exceling and growth academically. These students have shown that they have the ability to retain and comprehend a great deal of knowledge and the focus and determination to test at a high level.

The second part is the teachers and staff of BCSC. These educators have been the instrumental element in the accomplishments of their students and certainly share in their success. I can’t emphasize or say enough how important each teacher is in a student’s development. All of the dedication and long hours have made a real difference in the lives of our community’s future leaders.

At the beginning of the school year, I wrote a column about the importance of parents and teachers working together to ensure that children have the best possible opportunity to grow up and be whatever they want. Results like this are definitely encouraging and help illustrate what hard work on the part of the student, teacher and parent can accomplish.

If you’re interested in seeing specific grade-level results or those from other schools or districts, visit the Indiana Department of Education website at www.doe.in.gov and click on the ISTEP+ link at the bottom of the page.

I also want to give you a quick rundown of just a few of the great fall festivals in our area. Maybe you can take your students to one as a reward for doing so well.

Tree City Festival (Greensburg), Sept. 27-28
Batesville Applefest, Sept. 28-29
Versailles Pumpkin Show, Sept. 25-29

I’m looking forward to a great fall season and hope to see you out and about enjoying the beautiful colors, flavorful treats and companionship of friends.
