Work Begins on Carmel Segment of The New U.S. 31 Hamilton Co.

136th Street and Eglin Drive Closes Monday

I-465 Exit Restriction Begins Thursday

CARMEL, Ind. – Indiana Department of Transportation contractors begin work this week on U.S. 31 freeway upgrades between 96th and 136th streets.  The $141 million contract includes U.S. 31 interchange improvements at I-465 and new roundabout interchanges at 106th, 116th, 131st and 136th streets expected to be open to traffic by the end of 2015.

A joint venture of E & B Paving of Anderson and Gradex of Indianapolis plans to close 136th Street and Eglin Drive west of U.S. 31 for approximately 60 days beginning Monday, Sept. 23 for construction of a roundabout. The roundabout intersection will improve traffic flow during future construction and will eventually connect to a new U.S. 31 interchange with roundabouts controlling ramp and through traffic on 136th Street. Access to Rohrer Road and businesses are expected to remain open during construction. Traffic will be directed around the closure by signed detours.

Beginning Thursday, Sept. 19 at 9 p.m., contractors will close the left lane of the eastbound I-465 exit ramp to U.S. 31/Meridian Street (Exit 31) to place temporary pavement. The ramp lane will remain closed at the top of the ramp to allow contractors to begin construction of a new flyover bridge. All turn lanes will remain open approaching the base of the ramp.

On Friday, Sept. 20 at 9 p.m., the right lane of eastbound I-465 will be restricted near Exit 31 to U.S. 31/Meridian Street as contractors place temporary barrier wall along the shoulder. The restriction is expected to end by 6 a.m.

Motorists should expect off-road daytime construction along U.S. 31 and at the I-465 interchange. All work requiring restrictions on the highway and ramps will take place during overnight hours for the safety of workers and motorists and to minimize effects on traffic.

To receive updates on The New U.S. 31 Hamilton County, including dates and times of restrictions,

The New U.S. 31 Hamilton County is the first project to use new federal transportation legislation allowing up to 90 percent federal funding to be used for critical freight projects, an increase above the 80 percent maximum for non-interstate routes. An award for the final contract for The New U.S. 31 Hamilton County, which includes a new single-point urban interchange at State Road 32 in Westfield, is expected to be announced soon.

Upgrading or bypassing congested sections of U.S. 31, when completed, are expected to cut a half hour off travel time between Indianapolis and South Bend. Upgrading the existing highway between I-465 and State Road 38 to interstate standards is the largest and most aggressive road project ever attempted in Hamilton County. The New U.S. 31 Hamilton County project is intended to reduce congestion, improve safety and provide continuity of commerce and regional travel for a U.S. highway that stretches from Michigan to Alabama.
