[INDOT - East Central] (Indianapolis) Large Trucks Prohibited from Downtown I-65/I-70 Ramp System

Large Trucks Prohibited from I-65/70 Ramp System

Ramp System Exits onto Michigan, New York, Ohio, Fletcher Downtown

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) and Indiana State Police (ISP) have announced plans to temporarily prohibit large trucks from the I-65 southbound and I-70 westbound ramps exiting onto Michigan Street, New York Street, Ohio Street and Fletcher Avenue.

Since South Split construction began Sept. 3, INDOT has observed considerable truck traffic using the ramp system and Indianapolis streets to bypass the I-65 and I-70 closure. Tractor trailers cannot negotiate the turns required downtown without driving over curbs or into other traffic lanes, prompting traffic safety concerns.

South Split project contractors have posted additional overhead signage. This allows police agencies to enforce a restriction of trucks on the ramp system, except for trucks making local deliveries or pick-ups.

Multiple temporary and electronic message signs along I-65 and I-70 advise through traffic to follow the designated I-465 detour around the south side of the city. The State of Indiana recognizes the importance of freight traffic to the state and national economy, and the truck drivers avoiding the posted detour only make up a small percentage of that traffic. However, that small percentage has increased risk to other drivers disproportionately.

The I-65/I-70 closure is also giving INDOT the opportunity to make needed repairs to the bridge over Vermont Street. Starting Sept. 16, eastbound Vermont Street will be detoured south over Davidson Street, New York Street and Pine Street. Westbound Vermont Street will north over Pine Street, Michigan Street and Davidson Street. Bridge repairs are expected to be completed and the Vermont Street underpass reopened by Tuesday, Oct. 1.
