[r88] Speaker Bosma receives Presidential Citation from Aircraft Owners and Pilots Assoc.
Start Date: 9/16/2013 All Day
Entry Description

STATEHOUSE – House Speaker Brian C. Bosma (R-Indianapolis) was presented with the Presidential Citation from the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) on Friday evening during their Aviation Statehouse Update and Pilot Reception. The AOPA’s Presidential citation is reserved for the most respected and impactful members of Congress and state legislators throughout their organization’s 72 year history.

The AOPA has a membership base of nearly 400,000 pilots and aviation enthusiasts in the United States with 6,618 AOPA members in Indiana, and a total of 12, 451 active pilots in the state. The AOPA has achieved its prominent position through advocacy, leadership, and technical competence. Providing member services that range from representation at the federal, state, and local levels to legal services, advice, and other assistance, AOPA has built a service organization that far exceeds any other in the aviation community.

The award was presented to Speaker Bosma in recognition of his extraordinary dedication and perseverance put toward the passage of the 2013 Aviation Revitalization Bill - securing additional general aviation employment and economic activity across the State of Indiana.

“I can’t say enough about the work that Speaker Bosma has done on behalf of general aviation in Indiana,” said AOPA President and CEO Mark Baker. “This new legislation is bringing new business and jobs to Indiana by making it more affordable for pilots and aircraft owners to operate in the state. Those sorts of immediate results aren’t always easy to achieve in our current economy.”

Prior to the passage of HEA 1545, Indiana had the highest aviation fuel costs in the country. The aviation tax exemptions and restructurings have already had a positive impact on Indiana’s economy.

“I am humbled by this honor. It was one of our top priorities this legislative session to address job creation, and this tax cut will help lead to the creation of more jobs in Indiana. We passed the largest tax cut in Hoosier history this year, and I am pleased to say that with the aviation fuel taxes being cut we are now among one of the top states in the nation. By cutting this tax, Indiana is telling the nation that we are no longer a ‘fly by’ state, we are telling companies to land here – and stay here,” said Speaker Bosma.

“I am pleased that we were able to address job growth in Indiana through innovative economic incentives, like the restructuring of ‘avgas’. It is imperative that Indiana not be considered a state that people simply “fly over” but rather a state that attracts, retains and recruits new business,” said Speaker Bosma.
