Governor Pence Dedicates Robert N. Stewart Bridge

COLUMBUS, Ind. – Governor Mike Pence today joined state and local officials to formally dedicate Columbus’ signature cable-stayed bridge in honor of Robert N. Stewart, who served as mayor from 1984 to 1996.

“Mayor Robert N. Stewart is a true leader in every sense of the word,” Governor Pence said. “As mayor, he helped to create more than 10,000 new jobs for Hoosiers and presided over an economic, diversity and public partnership transformation of Columbus. It is my great privilege to name in his honor the bridge that serves as the gateway into the city he loves so dearly.”

Governor Pence, a resident of Columbus, signed Executive Order 13-19 renaming the bridge that carries eastbound Second Street/State Road 46 across the East Fork of the White River into downtown Columbus.

Designed by J. Muller International and completed in 1999 at a cost of $6.8 million, the 472-foot-long, three-lane bridge is the first of its kind in North America and offers an impressive view of two of the city’s notable structures, the Bartholomew County Courthouse and the tower of First Christian Church.

The bridge was one of the integral elements of a mammoth civic undertaking in the 1990s that came to be known as the Front Door Project, which opened the area for a tremendous wave of business development. The Front Door Project led to the development of a gateway from S.R. 46 and Interstate 65 to the west that better defined a city renowned for architectural excellence.
