[INDOT] I-65 Bridge Inspection With Lane Restrictions At Columbus
Start Date: 9/9/2013Start Time: 11:50 AM
End Date: 9/10/2013End Time: 11:50 AM
Entry Description

COLUMBUS, Ind.—The Indiana Department of Transportation has scheduled routine biannual inspections at two area bridges.  Both require traffic restrictions to allow contracted inspectors safe access to areas above and below the bridge decks.

Beginning Monday (SEPT. 9), a team of inspectors will examine the Interstate 65 bridge over State Road 46 west of Columbus.  Traffic will be restricted at ramps converging at S.R. 46 while crews inspect the underside of the I-65 structure.  Closures will be between the hours of 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.  These restrictions will exist daily (including the weekend) through Sunday, September 15.

  • Southbound I-65 exit ramp to eastbound S.R. 46 will be CLOSED.
  • The southbound exit ramp to westbound S.R. 46 will remain OPEN.
  • Northbound I-65 exit ramp to westbound S.R. 46 will be CLOSED.
  • The northbound exit ramp to eastbound S.R. 46 will remain OPEN.

All ramps will be open through the nighttime hours.

Northbound traffic may choose to detour around the bridge site via S.R. 11.  Motorists traveling south may wish to take U.S. 31 into Columbus, returning to I-65 via S.R. 46.

On Monday, September 16, inspectors will examine the top side of the bridge.  This will require individual lane closures.  These superstructure inspections will take place through Sunday, September 22—excluding Friday, September 20, a day when high traffic volume is expected.  Again, restrictions will be from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m.  During this time frame, only one lane of the 4-lane interstate highway will be closed at a time.  No ramps will be restricted.

Once I-65 bridge inspections have been completed, the inspection team will focus on the S.R. 46/Second Street bridge over the East Fork of White River--recently named the Robert N. Steward Bridge.  Between Monday, September 23 and Friday, October 4, crews will examine the top side of the Second Street bridge.  This will require closing two lanes of S.R. 46 at a time—leaving two lanes open to traffic.

  • Phase I inspections will route through lanes to the north side of the bridge.
  • Phase II inspections will route through lanes to one lane on the north side and one lane on the south side of the bridge.
  • Phase III inspections will route through lanes to the south side of the bridge.

There will be no weekend inspections or closures.

Inspections below the Second Street bridge deck will begin Monday, October 7.  There will be no lane restrictions.
