[INDOT - East Central] 136th Street in Carmel Closing for Roundabout

Entry Description

136th Street and Eglin Drive Closing for Roundabout Construction

CARMEL, Ind. – Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) contractors plan to close 136th Street and Eglin Drive west of U.S. 31 for approximately 60 days beginning on or after Monday, Sept. 16 for construction of a roundabout.

E & B Paving and Gradex are beginning a $141 million contract for The New U.S. 31 Hamilton County freeway upgrades between 96th and 136th streets.  The roundabout intersection will improve traffic flow during future construction and will eventually connect to a new U.S. 31 interchange with roundabouts controlling ramp and through traffic on 136th Street.

Access to Rohrer Road and businesses are expected to remain open during construction. Traffic will be directed around the closure by signed detours.

E & B and Gradex plan to begin work on the south end of the project, from 96th Street to north of 116th Street, this fall. Temporary widening is scheduled to begin mid-September, with traffic being shifted for construction in late October.

The project to upgrade U.S. 31 to freeway standards will require temporary highway and local roadway closures, which will be scheduled sequentially and limited in duration to minimize inconvenience to residents, businesses and motorists. Complete closure of U.S. 31 between 136th Street and the Old Meridian Street ramp north of 116th Street will significantly expedite construction in 2015.

Upgrading U.S. 31 to freeway standards from I-465 to State Road 38 is the largest and most aggressive road project ever implemented in Hamilton County. The New U.S. 31 Hamilton County is part of a Major Moves program to upgrade or bypass congested sections of U.S. 31 between Indianapolis and South Bend—reducing congestion, improving safety and providing continuity of commerce and regional travel for a U.S. highway that stretches from Michigan to Alabama.
