[INDOT - East Central] East Street Shifting to Second Phase at I-70 Bridge
Start Date: 8/18/2014Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 8/18/2014
Entry Description

Traffic Shifting to Second Phase of Construction on East Street Bridge

INDIANAPOLIS – On Monday, August 18, crews plan to shift both directions of traffic on East Street to share the new west side of the bridge over Interstate 70.  Temporary restrictions on East Street between Prospect Street on the south side of the bridge and the I-70 exit ramp on the north side of the bridge should be expected during daylight hours.

The traffic shift will allow contractors to begin removing and rebuilding the east side of the bridge deck.  Overnight lane restrictions (9 p.m. to 6 a.m.) and temporary traffic stops of up to 20 minutes each (11 p.m. to 5 a.m.) will be required on eastbound and westbound I-70 below as the existing bridge deck and beams are removed.  Weather permitting, these recurring overnight restrictions should be expected through the end of August.

Before the end of this year, INDOT intends to rebuild and raise the East Street bridge by about twelve inches to achieve a minimum clearance of at least 15 feet, 1 inch over I-70.  Beaty Construction, the INDOT contractor for the $2.9 million project, is rebuilding the bridge deck one half at a time, allowing East Street to remain open to one lane of traffic in each direction.

Last year, INDOT was able to increase clearances of seven bridges near the south split to at least 15 feet.  An accelerated project closed I-70 and I-65 between the north and south split for 44 days to reconstruct and lower one-half mile of pavement.

Even with the increased clearances at the South Split, INDOT reminds all drivers to follow safety requirements by properly securing and measuring all loads, obtaining permits for loads higher than 13 feet 6 inches and following designated routes for oversize vehicles.

Information about the project and video of bridge strikes are available at  Stay informed by signing up to receive email updates here.

Project updates are posted to INDOT’s social media pages for East Central Indiana, which includes Indianapolis.  Project posts are tagged with #EastStreet and #SouthSplit on the Indiana Department of Transportation: East Central Facebook page and on Twitter @INDOT_ECentral.
