[INDOT - East Central] Crews Pouring East Street Bridge Deck Saturday
Start Date: 8/2/2014Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 8/2/2014
Entry Description

Crews Pouring East Street Bridge Deck Saturday

INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) contractors plan to pour half of the new concrete bridge deck on East Street over Interstate 70 this Saturday.

The operation will require various restrictions on westbound and eastbound I-70 between Meridian Street (Exit 79 A) and the I-65/I-70 south split.  Lane restrictions are scheduled to begin at 6:00 a.m. Saturday beginning with westbound I-70.  Lane restrictions will shift to the eastbound side of I-70 as work progresses from north to south on the East Street bridge overhead.  Contractors anticipate ending restrictions by approximately 3 p.m.

For the safety of workers and motorists during the deck pour, East Street will be closed between Prospect Street and the East Street ramp from I-65/I-70.  A signed detour will direct motorists around the site.

  • Northbound:  Morris Street to Shelby Street to Virginia Avenue to East Street
  • Southbound:  Virginia Avenue to Prospect Street to East Street

The second phase of construction is expected to begin in a few weeks and will shift both directions of traffic to share the new side of the bridge as contractors begin removing and rebuilding the east side.

Before the end of this year, INDOT intends to rebuild and raise the East Street bridge by about twelve inches to achieve a minimum clearance of at least 15 feet, 1 inch over I-70.  Beaty Construction, the INDOT contractor for the $2.9 million project, is rebuilding the bridge deck one half at a time, allowing East Street to remain open to one lane of traffic in each direction.  Once the western half of the bridge is complete, traffic will be shifted onto it and construction will begin on the second half.

Last year, INDOT was able to increase clearances of seven bridges near the south split to at least 15 feet.  An accelerated project closed I-70 and I-65 between the north and south split for 44 days to reconstruct and lower one-half mile of pavement.  The South Split project was necessary to reduce the potential for collisions from unpermitted and off-route trucks with oversize and unsecure loads.  Repeated bridge strikes from these trucks posed a safety concern.

Even with the increased clearances at the South Split, INDOT reminds all drivers to follow safety requirements by properly securing and measuring all loads, obtaining permits for loads higher than 13 feet 6 inches and following designated routes for oversize vehicles.

Information about the project and video of bridge strikes are available at www.SouthSplit.in.gov. Motorists, businesses and residents are encouraged to stay informed by signing up to receive email updates here.

Project updates are posted to INDOT’s social media pages for East Central Indiana, which includes Indianapolis. Project posts are tagged with #EastStreet and #SouthSplit on the Indiana Department of Transportation: East Central Facebook page and on Twitter @INDOT_ECentral.
