Entry Description

Bartholomew County: A brief early morning pursuit Saturday resulted in the arrest of a Columbus man. According to Trooper Matt Simmons, shortly after 2:00 a.m. Saturday morning he was patrolling Middle Road in Columbus when he observed a Gold 2002 Ford Ranger pickup truck traveling northbound on Middle Road with very bright, white lights to the rear of the vehicle. Tpr. Simmons turned around and followed the pickup truck a short distance as it turned southbound on U.S. 31. When he went to initiate a traffic stop the vehicle accelerated and ran a stop sign at 25th Street and continued southbound on U.S. 31 reaching approximately 80 mph before turning into McDonald’s parking lot on National Road. The truck came to a stop and the driver exited the vehicle and started walking very quickly towards Tpr. Simmons’ vehicle disregarding Tpr. Simmons’ commands to stop. Shortly after the traffic stop, Columbus Police Officer Jim Paris arrived on scene and eventually deployed his Taser Electronic Control Device which brought the suspect under control.

The driver, later identified as 44 year old Todd A. Harmon of Columbus, fell to the ground after being struck by the Taser and suffered a small laceration to his head. He was transported to Columbus Regional Hospital for treatment of the injury and released then transported to Bartholomew County Jail where he was held on charges of Resisting Law Enforcement with a Vehicle (Class D Felony), Operating While Intoxicated with a Prior Conviction (Class D Felony), Operating While Intoxicated to Endanger (Class A Misdemeanor), and Reckless Driving (Class B Misdemeanor). Also assisting Tpr. Simmons was Lt. Jeff Williams and Officer Bernard Sims of Columbus Police Department.
