Entry Description

STATEHOUSE- At Monday’s second meeting of the Indiana Career Council (ICC), State Representative Steve Braun (R- Zionsville) was named chairman of the Indiana Workforce Intelligence System (IWIS) taskforce.

The ICC is a 16 member council which is entrusted with aligning the various participants in the state's educational, job skills and career training system in a way which best serves Hoosiers. In particular, one of the Council’s statutory duties is to provide administrative oversight of the IWIS.

This system maintains longitudinal educational and workforce data that can be used to improve the effect of the State’s educational delivery system on the economic opportunities of Hoosiers as well as guide state and local decision makers in retraining the state’s unemployed. This data is provided by groups such as the Department of Workforce Development (DWD), Commission for Higher Education (CHE), Department of Education (DOE) and Indiana Business Research Center (IBRC).

“The IWIS is the part of the Indiana Career Council initiative that is going to provide the data related to identifying current and future job openings and the skills required to fill those jobs,” said Rep. Braun. “For this to work correctly and for us to make informed decisions on how we train unemployed Hoosiers with the proper skills and how schools develop the proper curriculum to build the skill sets necessary for the jobs of the future, we must have in place a comprehensive and effective workforce intelligence system.  As chairman of this taskforce, my primary job is to go out and identify what we need to do to make sure we create that robust system.”

Specifically, the taskforce is charged with analyzing the current functionality of IWIS, investigating the best practices for longitudinal data systems used by comparable government entities, making recommendations for the improvement of IWIS, evaluating the financial model and ensuring that IWIS maintains maximum privacy and security of protected and/or confidential information.

“It is extremely important that the ICC develop a plan for the effective administrative oversight of IWIS,” said Rep. Braun. “I was humbled to receive this appointment and I would like to thank the Governor for his confidence in appointing me Chairman to this important taskforce.”

After receiving a degree in economics from Harvard University, Rep. Braun built and took public a technology consulting business that specialized in helping Fortune 1000 companies collect, organize and analyze all their data assets and use that data for driving the growth of their business.

“I know that my private sector experience will complement my passion for seeing Indiana lead and be successful in this workforce and economic development effort,” said Rep. Braun. “I look forward to getting to work on this taskforce and helping to propel Indiana forward in the areas of employment and skills training.”

The taskforce will provide an initial report detailing its analyses and recommendations to the ICC by November 18.
