Entry Description

INDIANAPOLIS – Today Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller updated a new state commission on the multilayered coordinated efforts of the Attorney General’s Office to protect children.

“Because we work with many agencies and all branches of state government, my office has sought out the expertise of many involved with our justice system so that collectively we can effectively devise systems and coordinate approaches that will protect the most vulnerable Hoosiers: our children,” Zoeller said.

At the first meeting of the Commission to Improving the Status of Children in Indiana of which he is a non-voting member, Zoeller presented a report highlighting the following ongoing projects the Attorney General’s Office has undertaken:

The Prescription Drug Task Force
.  Through its www.BitterPill.in.gov initiative, the task force seeks to curb the diversion and abuse of prescribed drugs such as addictive painkillers and antianxiety drugs that are commonly abused by teenagers who obtain pills from family medicine cabinets unaware of the health risks.  The task force which Zoeller chairs has also focused on neonatal addiction caused from exposure to drugs in the womb when mothers abuse substances during pregnancy.

The Indiana Sex Offender Registry.
The Attorney General’s Office has worked with DOC to enhance and improve accuracy of the online offender registry so that it is a more reliable source of information for parents to utilize to protect their children from predators residing nearby.

IP
ATH Task Force – Indiana Protection for Abused and Trafficked Humans.  IPATH has focused on identifying trafficked children trapped in lives of prostitution, and has through public awareness sought to deter the demand for the commercial sex industry that fuels trafficking.

School Resource Officers.
Zoeller was an early advocate of using state grant funding to create and expand positions for School Resource Officers:  trained law enforcement officers stationed in school buildings who maintain discipline and build respect for law among students.

The Attorney General also noted several other initiatives in his office, including address confidentiality for domestic violence victims and their children, investigations by the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit of unscrupulous pediatric dental care providers, and appellate representation of the Department of Child Services in the state’s highest courts.  Zoeller thanked Indiana Supreme Court Justice Loretta Rush, the commission’s chair, and legislators for bringing together a multi-agency effort targeting the unmet needs of children.
