Summer ending, but good times continue

Our mild summer couldn’t have been more perfect for this year’s State Fair. Sunshine, warm temperatures, a great program packed with a variety of fun and family-focused events and a long list of available deep-fried delicacies were a recipe for success. The fair had one of the highest attendance records for the event at more than 900,000 visitors with three days setting one-day attendance records.
The State Fair is a big sending off for summer – bittersweet, I know – and a wholesome celebration of some of the great things that make Indiana so special. I’m confident that the fair can break the one million mark in the very near future as more and more people look to take in the sights, sounds and smells of the fair.
It was a whirlwind of a festival and fair season, and I am so thankful for all the opportunities I had to meet great people in our community. Noblesville and Hamilton County had a full lineup of events this summer that got people out and about. I commend the city and the county for putting on so many entertaining activities.
With Labor Day right around the corner, I’m sure a lot of people will be looking to take a mini vacation and enjoy some quality rest and relaxation. If you aren’t exactly sure what you and the family are going to do over the holiday, I encourage you to visit There isn’t a better starting place than Visit Indiana if you are looking to “restart your engines”.
Even as a lifelong-Hoosier, I know there are places to see and things to do that I don’t even know are out there. Visit Indiana has everything from discounts on travel, lodging and food to trip ideas and event calendars.  Indiana is blessed with 34 state parks and eight inns that offer a wide range of activities in beautiful settings filled with a lot of Indiana history; one of the closest being Ft. Harrison State Park. There’s also Indiana Dunes to the north or Spring Mill State Park if you’re heading south. Any of these places are great for the whole family to enjoy.
If you want to stay local, visit There are events taking place almost every day in the coming weeks and over Labor Day weekend: caboose rides will travel through Noblesville with pickups at the Indiana Transportation Museum and the Square in Downtown; the farmer’s market continues to take place in the overflow parking lot at Riverview Hospital; the summer movie series will have a viewing on August 31st at Forest Park; Symphony on the Prairie will be hosting the Classical Mystery Tour: Music Of The Beatles Aug. 30 through Sept. 1; and Mumford and Sons will conclude the Labor Day weekend with a concert at Klipsch Music Center on Sept. 2.
Then of course if you wish to follow your favorite school, fall sports are underway with the first game of the high school football season kicking off Friday. Many of the other sports like soccer, tennis, golf and volleyball have already started so pick your pleasure and catch a game.
These are just a few events that will be taking place around Noblesville and in Hamilton County. I hope this gives you a chance to think ahead and make plans to take part in some of these activities. Enjoy!

My column also appears in the Times of Noblesville.
