Statehouse Update: Advancing Hoosier small businesses starts with you
Start Date: 8/19/2013Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 8/19/2013
Entry Description

By Indiana State Senator Richard D. Young Jr. (D-Milltown)

Word Count: 375

It’s no secret. Indiana’s small business community is the cornerstone of the state’s economy. Employing 1.2 million Hoosiers in 2010 – nearly half the state’s private-sector labor force – Indiana’s more than 488,000 small businesses drive local economies in every corner of our state. That’s why ensuring small business leaders and budding entrepreneurs have the resources they need to succeed is a crucial step toward putting Hoosiers back to work and the state back on the path toward prosperity.

The Indiana Small Business Development Center (ISBDC) is a statewide effort to meet that challenge. Founded in 1985 as a partnership with the federal Small Business Administration, the ISBDC has grown from four centers to 14, situated in every region of the state and tasked with providing a “positive and measurable” impact on small business creation, growth and sustainability. To achieve this, the centers provide small business leaders with no-cost consultation and a litany of services aimed at helping Hoosiers transform ideas into reality or expand existing businesses.

Services like drawing up a strategic plan for prospective entrepreneurs or identifying new markets, consumer buying behaviors and best practices with access to market research are just a few services among many other available options. The impact of the centers’ work is tangible, starting more than 240 Hoosier businesses, helping to create more than 1,600 jobs in 2012 and saving nearly 11,000 more.  But to fully realize small businesses’ potential, lawmakers must work to craft public policy that removes barriers and puts entrepreneurs in a position to succeed.

One step toward achieving this is simple – start a dialogue. On August 20th at Padgett in New Albany, we will have that very opportunity. The Small Business Caucus, a group of state legislators working to advance issues pertinent to small businesses, will hold a town hall-style meeting beginning at 5pm. Join me and other stakeholders for this excellent opportunity for small business owners and concerned Hoosiers to offer their unique perspectives and help shape economic development and small business policy for the future.
