[s31] Sens. Merritt, Delph: Mayor’s Veterans Appreciation Day to Connect, Honor Hoosier Veterans
Start Date: 8/2/2013Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 8/2/2013End Time: 11:59 PM
Entry Description

STATEHOUSE (Aug. 2, 2013) – On Saturday, Aug. 3, State Sens. Jim Merritt (R-Indianapolis) and Mike Delph (R-Carmel) will take part in efforts to connect and honor Hoosier veterans through the Mayor’s Veterans Appreciation Day at Indianapolis Marriott East.

Mayor Greg Ballard created the free event to bring together veterans, their families and local service organizations for a day of food, fellowship and information sharing. Merritt and Delph were invited to speak to those attending this weekend.

In his remarks, Delph will discuss a law he authored in the 2013 legislative session to expand state contracting opportunities for veteran-owned businesses.

“Young veterans can face a long road in finding work after their military service,” Delph said. “With the national unemployment rate for post-9/11 veterans at 10 percent, we must ensure we’re doing everything possible to connect these veterans and employers. It’s the least we can do to thank these men and women for their sacrifices.”

Merritt will also comment on veteran employment at the event. He will discuss his plan to introduce a bill next year that would create an Indiana online job bank for service members, helping them find employers that are specifically interested in hiring veterans.

“My proposal would establish a consolidated database of information, making it a one-stop shop for veteran job seekers,” Merritt said. “It’s my hope this will lead to more Hoosier veterans securing stable careers.”

New to the event this year is a career fair for active service members, veterans and eligible dependents. Sponsored by the Indiana Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, the fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
