Entry Description

STATEHOUSE (Aug. 2, 2013) — Area roads, bridges and highways will benefit from significant funding increases over the next two years, said State Sen. Brandt Hershman (R-Buck Creek).

During the 2013 legislative session, the General Assembly passed the fiscal year 2014-2015 state budget, which increased transportation funding by $210 million per year. This includes $100 million for local units each year.

Hershman, who was a sponsor and conferee on the state budget, said strengthening Indiana’s transportation system is an ongoing priority. In 2006, he co-authored legislation that created the Major Moves transportation initiative, which has already invested $7.5 billion in infrastructure development. This year, he authored language for the budget that funded Amtrak services and equipment purchases, expanding travel options for Hoosiers.

“Our economy and community cannot thrive without a solid transportation network,” Hershman said. “Especially in our country’s fast-paced market, it’s crucial that we keep our infrastructure in top shape. Not only does this make our area more attractive to potential businesses, it gives families another reason to settle here.”

In total, local counties and municipalities are slated to receive the following allocations, which represent an increase from current funding levels:

  • Boone County: $8,098,567 ($2,047,408 increase)
  • Carroll County: $5,301,926 ($1,340,576 increase)
  • Clinton County: $6,625,124 ($1,674,995 increase)
  • Jasper County: $6,936,039 ($1,753,719 increase)
  • Tippecanoe County: $14,707,783 ($3,717,888 increase)
  • White County: $6,541,692 ($1,654,011 increase)
