Sharing our special day

This column is normally reserved for important information from the Statehouse, but this week I hope you don't mind me turning in a more personal direction. Sunday, July 28, was a life changing day when Perry Williams and I got married at the First Christian Church in Noblesville by Pastor John Davis. It was such a special day in our life as we took our vows and united in holy matrimony. It was a meaningful ceremony attended by many of our closest friends, relatives and colleagues. After all of the planning, preparing and organizing, being completely happy is the only way to describe our feelings.
In many ways, it was a traditional wedding, but we threw in a few "curve balls".  Perry and I have a long history of friendship like many Noblesville kids that began at the Forest Park ballpark. When I was in high school and Perry was in college, we both worked at the Forest Park ballpark; he umpired and I ran the concession stand. So, it was only natural to throw in a few of our favorite baseball traditions.

At the church, the guests were greeted with a portrait of the baseball field created by one of our good friends, Brad Cook. After the ceremony, Perry and I left the church to the tune of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game”. At the reception, all of the guests were then treated to cracker jacks and a baseball but not before they had the chance to enjoy a good ol’ American hot dog and some fried chicken. Nothing beats going to the ball park to enjoy America’s favorite pastime, so why not make it a part of the wedding?

It was truly a special moment to be married in the church I grew up in and have the reception in a place with so many great memories for both of us. Many have shared how happy they are for Perry and me, but no one would be happier than our parents, Robert and Lillian Kreag and Charles and Rae Williams. On Sunday, they were there looking over us. Perry and I are both only children loved deeply by our parents. They may have passed away, but they are still an important part of our lives.

It was great to be surrounded by my new family: Perry's two daughters, Melissa and Mary Ann, and their families.  I look forward to all of the new memories we will be sharing for many years to come. I want to give a big thank you to everyone who attended and enjoyed the beautiful voices of Susan Beckwith and Larry Pryor during the wedding which carried over to the reception and kept the party going throughout the night.

I feel that moments such as these are meant to be shared, and I feel incredibly blessed to have that opportunity. We couldn't have pulled this off without the great help of our friends. It is amazing how everyone pulled together to make this a day we will never forget. Also, a big thank you to the weather persons for a great weather forecast – who would have thought that we would enjoy low 70's in July?

Perry and I have a great love not only for each other but for Noblesville and the surrounding communities. We are blessed to live here, and we are looking forward to creating many new memories and catching a ball game every chance we get.

Thanks for letting me change focus this week. I will be back on track next week with more information from the Statehouse, but this experience was too good not to share.

My column is also published in the Times of Noblesville.
