[GOV] Day 1: Governor Pence Kicks Off Indiana Presence at Farnborough International Air Show
Start Date: 7/14/2014Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 7/14/2014
Entry Description

London – Governor Mike Pence began his jobs and economic development mission to the United Kingdom today by attending the inauguration of the Indiana booth at the Farnborough International Airshow.

“Opportunities to showcase Indiana as a state that works for business are around every corner here at the Farnborough International Airshow,” said Pence. “This is one of the world’s largest gatherings of the aerospace industry, and business leaders have flocked here to discover how to improve their businesses. Company executives who stop by Indiana’s first-ever booth here are telling me that from our lower cost of doing business to our workforce skilled in manufacturing, engineering and innovation, they want to take a closer look at why Indiana is a state that works for aerospace.”

Indiana’s booth marks the state’s debut at Farnborough, one of the world’s largest, most diverse gatherings of the international aviation community. Joining Pence were aviation companies with Indiana operations and regional economic development groups that are showcasing their products and communities at the airshow as part of Indiana’s exhibit.

In the afternoon, Pence hosted a reception at Indiana’s booth to celebrate the Hoosier State’s burgeoning aerospace industry. The event was attended by more than 50 executives of aviation companies that either currently have operations in the Indiana or are considering the state for future investment opportunities.

In addition, Pence’s first day at the airshow included meetings with executives from Rolls-Royce and Alcoa, both of which have made recent investments in Indiana and are considering the state for future expansion opportunities. In 2012, Rolls-Royce announced plans to invest $42 million to build a new advanced manufacturing facility in Indianapolis. Just this May, Pence joined executives from Alcoa to break ground on the company’s $100 million jet engine part manufacturing facility in La Porte.

“Meetings today with executives from Rolls-Royce and Alcoa gave us the opportunity to discuss how Indiana has become a leader in aerospace innovation, with companies like theirs doing trailblazing work throughout the state,” said Pence. “Successful operations attract industry growth, and so we encouraged them to keep up the great work. Through their current activity in the state, Hoosiers are gaining the experience and skills needed to spur the industry’s continued Indiana expansion, and for that we are thankful.”

Since 2002, Indiana exports for the aircraft and spacecraft industries have expanded at an average annual rate of 28.9 percent. Leading aviation companies, including GE Aviation, Alcoa, BAE Systems and Rolls-Royce, are fueling this growth by making multi-million dollar investments in Indiana in recent years.

Updates from the governor’s jobs and economic development mission, including video clips and photos, will be posted throughout the trip here: http://www.in.gov/gov/UK2014.htm.
