I-69, Allisonville Road Projects Receive Regional DOT Awards

INDIANAPOLIS – Transportation officials from Midwestern states honored two innovative Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) projects that opened to traffic last year.

Sponsored by state transportation association AASHTO, AAA and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the America's Transportation Awards competition recognizes the very best transportation projects in three main categories: Ahead of Schedule, Under Budget, and Best Use of Innovation.

Interstate 69 Sections 1-3 received a regional Under Budget award and the I-465/Allisonville Road interchange reconstruction in Indianapolis received a regional Ahead of Schedule award in their respective project size categories. The 10 projects with the highest scores nationwide will compete for the Grand Prize and People's Choice awards, which will be announced in October.

“We are appreciative of our peer departments of transportation recognizing the innovative approaches and core values that allow INDOT to deliver transportation projects for Hoosiers on time and under budget,” said Interim Commissioner Brandye Hendrickson.

The 67 miles of I-69 Sections 1-3 opened for business in November 2012 years ahead of schedule, and now saves motorists more than 30 minutes in travel time between Evansville and Crane. Construction was nearly $80 million under budget, while total costs are more than $300 million below initial estimates found in the Draft Environmental Impact Statements.

For reconstruction of the I-465 interchange, engineers estimated a seven-month closure of the Allisonville Road bridge near Castleton Square Mall in Indianapolis. Contractors competed over both cost and closure days using an innovative bid technique that resulted in a closure of less than four months for the busy commuter and retail corridor.

“Our entries this year encompass the broad scope of transportation projects completed every day by state transportation departments,” said Mike Lewis, AASHTO president and director of the Rhode Island Department of Transportation. “The America's Transportation Awards competition showcases how state DOTs are delivering quality projects with limited transportation dollars. Through this competition, we honor these projects for excellent stewardship of our tax dollars and the incredible innovations they display.”
