S.R. 252 Pavement Maintenance Resumes Saturday

SHELBY COUNTY, Ind. – Pavement maintenance work will resume at 12 noon Saturday, July 27 on State Road 252 between I-65 and Flat Rock in southern Shelby County.

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is completing the work over two weekends to reduce heavy highway traffic through the work zone. INDOT pilot vehicles will lead each direction of traffic past flaggers at 20 mph when workers are present.

Work will begin after local stone quarries close at 12 noon on Saturday in the eastbound lanes of S.R. 252 and continue on Sunday in the westbound lanes. A regulatory reduced speed limit of 40 mph will be enforced where the chip seal treatment has been freshly applied.

A failed chip seal application will be removed from a three-mile section of one lane during the day on Wednesday, July 31. Weather permitting, the treatment will be reapplied the weekend of Saturday, Aug. 3 and Sunday, Aug. 4.

Every winter, water seeps into cracks in deteriorating roads and freezes, expanding the layers of pavement, stone and soil beneath the surface. As the ice melts and contracts, heavy highway traffic further loosens the pavement, forming potholes.

INDOT’s pavement preservation program improves pavement friction and seals these tiny cracks before potholes form. For every dollar invested in pavement preservation, research estimates it saves taxpayers $6 to $14 in future maintenance and construction costs. Pavement preservation uses fewer natural resources than reconstruction and significantly reduces traffic delays.
