[SUPREME] Henry County Probation Officer Honored For Service
Start Date: 7/26/2013 All Day
End Date: 7/26/2013
Entry Description
Henry County Chief Probation Officer Susan Lightfoot has been named to “The Order of Augustus” by the Probation Officers Advisory Board of the Judicial Conference of Indiana.  The annual award is presented to an outstanding probation officer who exemplifies the ideals of John Augustus, the founder of probation.

Indiana Supreme Court Justice Steven David presented Ms. Lightfoot with the honor during the opening session of the Probation Officers Annual Meeting in Indianapolis on May 2nd.  “Susan Lightfoot is a model of professionalism and courtesy for the field of probation,” said Justice David.  “We’re all grateful for her leadership, especially her willingness to volunteer for pilot projects that implement new programs for the state.”

Probation Officers Advisory Board Chair, Christina Ball of Marion County Probation, explained the significance of the award by calling attention to its namesake.  John Augustus was a Boston boot-maker in the mid-1800’s and is known as the father of probation in the United States.  Ms. Ball said, “We give this award to a person whose commitment and personal dedication have exemplified the ideals and philosophy of John Augustus.  His creed was, ‘To raise the fallen, reform the criminal, and so far as my humble abilities would allow, to transform the abode of suffering and misery to the home of happiness.’  Susan Lightfoot follows in that strong tradition and her efforts make the community a better place.”

Ms. Lightfoot was nominated for the award by Henry Circuit Court Judge Mary Willis and the Henry County Probation Department.

The Probation Officers Advisory Board consists of 23 probation officers; 17 who are elected from districts and 6 who are appointed by the Chief Justice of the Indiana Supreme Court.  The Advisory Board is supported by the Indiana Judicial Center, which develops and provides continuing education and research assistance for judges, probation officers and other court personnel.  For more information on the Advisory Board and the Judicial Center, visit
