[IDEM] Central Indiana exceeds EPA standards for fine airborne particulates
Start Date: 7/18/2013 All Day
End Date: 7/18/2013
Entry Description

U.S. EPA has formally designated central Indiana (Hamilton, Hendricks, Johnson, Marion and Morgan Counties) to ‘attainment’ for the annual PM2.5 standard.  This action confirms that the air these Hoosiers are breathing meets health based standards.  U.S. EPA’s action will also allow IDEM to issue permits for economic development projects that include required air pollution controls.

Thomas Easterly, commissioner of IDEM, says the designation shows that clean air investments that each of us have made such as purchasing newer vehicles and funding power plant emission controls have improved air quality in central Indiana.

“Governor Pence and I are proud that Indiana has made great progress toward cleaner air and achieved the fine particle standards in central Indiana,” said Easterly. “Our agency continues to follow the governor’s Road Map for Indiana, which promotes a high quality of life in the state by routinely monitoring air quality. IDEM works with residents, industry, and other entities to ensure Indiana’s air continues to be safe for everyone to breathe.”

Particulate matter (PM), which is a mixture of extremely small particles found in the air, is made up of dust, dirt, soot, smoke, and liquid droplets. Particulates in the PM2.5 category are 2.5 micrometers in diameter or smaller, and are typically found in smoke or haze. For a size reference, the particles are smaller than the diameter of a human hair.
