INDIANAPOLIS—Today marks the opening of the 28th annual INShape Indiana Black and Minority Health Fair. The Health Fair kicks off at 4 p.m. and runs through Sunday, July 21 at the Indiana Convention Center, Hall D, in downtown Indianapolis.

“Each year, the INShape Indiana Black and Minority Health Fair works to educate and provide screenings to people of all ages,” said Antoniette Holt, Director, Indiana State Department of Health, Office of Minority Health. “This year’s theme, Good Health for All Generations, touches on the importance of family, friends and community members in achieving individual good health. Every generation influences the health of the one that follows. The Health Fair is a place for people to learn how they can improve their own health and inspire others to live healthier lives, as well.”

Attendees of the Minority Health Fair can take advantage of several free screenings, health information and giveaways. Some of the health screenings offered include: blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol, syphilis, HIV (Saturday only), body mass index, prostate, vision and dental.  In addition, staff will offer body health analysis, stroke assessment and lead testing for children. New in 2013, are hearing and foot screenings.

Special guests at the Health Fair include players from the Indiana Fever and former NBA All-Star and Hall of Famer Dominique Wilkins on Saturday and Sunday.

Visitors can see cooking demonstrations and participate in fitness-oriented videogames, dancing and more.

Today’s opening ceremony begins at 3 p.m. and features keynote speaker, Chef and author Dr. Timothy Moore. “The Vegan Chef,” Moore, once weighed 320 pounds, overcame diabetes and reached a healthy weight after becoming a holistic vegan. Moore has written three books, two of which focus on health matters. His 2012 release, “47 Tips to Reverse Your Diabetes,” focuses on using nutrition to control the disease. Moore is also a traditional naturopath doctor, certified nutrition specialist and food consultant. He will present cooking demonstrations and he will be available to the public for questions throughout the Health Fair.

New this year, a Faith Leaders Symposium on Healthy Living will occur prior to the opening ceremony on Thursday from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Dr. Clyde Posely, pastor of Antioch Baptist Church, will be speaking at the symposium.

The event is sponsored by the Indiana State Department of Health with the assistance of Indiana Black Expo, Inc., Community Health Network, Eli Lilly and Company and other partners.  For a complete list of sponsors, visit the Office of Minority Health’s website at
