[s14] Kruse Report: Improving Indiana’s Schools
Start Date: 7/17/2013Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 7/17/2013End Time: 11:59 PM
Entry Description

Just as a great teacher can improve student learning, a great principal can improve his or her school. With that in mind, the Indiana legislature passed a law this session creating the Principal Leadership Institute to help Hoosier public school principals further their professional development.

The Institute takes place at Indiana State University, bringing together mentors and educators who are themselves highly regarded in their communities. These individuals will lead a symposium focused on giving principals tools to lead and improve their schools in measurable ways.

Over the next two years, the Institute will bring together 50 of the state’s top principals, beginning what I hope will be the nation’s premier leadership program for school principals. As educators and administrators cooperate to learn from each other and improve their own personal leadership capacities, the communities and schools to which they return will also improve.

Applications are now open for administrators to apply to the Indiana Principal Leadership Institute, and I highly encourage our local principals to apply. Nominating a principal demonstrates that the superintendent, school board and community believe the principal has a commitment to improving the school and the potential to make the school succeed.

This program is a unique opportunity to address the current needs of a school, including teacher evaluation models, student performance, community involvement and shaping a strong school culture.

Do you know a principal who might be interested in the Institute? Send them to to learn about applying. Classes begin July 17.

As always, I want to hear your concerns and comments on education and other issues in Indiana. Please contact me at or by phone at 800-382-9467 should you have any questions about new laws or ideas about how to improve our community.

Training principals together to improve Indiana will help broaden our educational scope, but there are still many ways we can advance Indiana education. What do you think?
