Entry Description
A wonderful wedding in Brazil

Sometimes, life presents unusual and exciting events for a family.  Life did that for our family in June as we travelled to Itajuba, Brazil for the wedding of our youngest son and his beautiful bride, Debora.  It was a wonderful experience for us, and we are pleased to have Debora as our daughter-in-law.  The wedding and reception were exceptional events for us, and we had a great time. However, the trip was not without some pitfalls.

The flight from Chicago to Sao Paulo was about 11 hours.  It was an overnight flight, taking off at 9:30 p.m.  Everything was going well until about 3:00 a.m. when my wife, Ann, woke both of us abruptly and said she was sick.  We got to the restroom and then she had to lie down in the open area of the emergency exit.  Staff brought blankets, oxygen and air sick bags as Ann lay there, miserable, for over four hours.  A doctor from the Mayo Clinic was two seats back and he came up to volunteer his services.  He examined Ann and diagnosed her with vertigo.  He was correct! She was miserable for the majority of the flight, however once we landed her condition improved.

We also had a seat mate, Donna, a Brazilian woman and a lawyer from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She offered to stay with us through the airport.  None of our party could speak Portuguese effectively, so we welcomed her company.  Donna interpreted for us as we went through customs and retrieved our luggage.  She helped me exchange dollars for reals and even walked us to the parking lot.  Donna hugged us all and sent us off with our driver.  I am convinced that the doctor from the Mayo Clinic and Donna were our angels, because they assisted us in a definite time of need.  There is really no other explanation.

Next our daughter and her husband came in, but their luggage did not.  We spent all day Friday worrying that the wedding clothes would not arrive.  The airline delivered the luggage about 7:00 p.m. Friday night; needless to say we were all very relieved.

The wedding was scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. The bride said to arrive by at least 10:20.  I was to walk the mother of the bride at 10:30 and a 10:20 arrival time we were told that ten minutes would give us  plenty of time to line up and prepare.  Remember, we don’t speak Portuguese.  Someone said in an off-handed remark, “The Brazilian bride is always late!”  We walked down the aisle at 11:00 a.m.  Everything else went like clockwork.  The day was beautiful and the reception was wonderful, it was such an experience watching my son take his vows with his new bride.

The remainder of our visit was eventful as we did many visits to local attractions.  Churches, colleges and businesses were all interesting for us.  We did some shopping and then prepared for the trip to come home.

I wanted to share all of this with you because these past few weeks have brought our family so much joy with this wedding. It was a great experience to get a broader vision of the much bigger world out there. Experiencing their culture and traditions was certainly a learning experience for both Ann and I.  We feel incredibly blessed to have our family expand. It must be noted that our son and his bride are coming back to Indiana to live, and we are ecstatic about that!

Perhaps my next column can be more focused on local issues, but this experience was too good not to discuss.

More later,

Bill Friend
(A proud and happy father)
