Entry Description

STATEHOUSE (July 15, 2013) – The Indiana American Legion recently honored State Sen. Mike Delph (R- Carmel) with a Distinguished Public Service Award at the organization’s 2013 Department Convention in Indianapolis.

Indiana American Legion Department Commander Richard Jewell said the award is in recognition of Delph’s continued efforts to author and sponsor legislation that supports Hoosier veterans.

"Senator Delph has proven invaluable to the American Legion in its legislative efforts on behalf of Indiana's veterans,” Jewell said.

Delph authored a new law this legislative session giving state government the goal of securing 3 percent of all state contracts with veteran-owned small businesses.

He voted in favor of a new provision creating the “combat to college” program that requires state colleges and universities with at least 200 veteran students to establish specified academic and administrative guidance. Delph also supported a new law helping to reduce veterans’ college costs by allowing honorably discharged veterans coming to Indiana after service outside the state to be automatically eligible for in-state tuition at state universities.

“The Indiana American Legion deserves recognition for its support of Hoosier veterans,” Delph said. “The organization plays an integral role in communicating with state lawmakers about the needs of those in the armed forces. Like the Legion, I pledge to continue to do what I can as a public servant to help our veterans.”

Delph has served in the United States Army Reserve since 2001 and currently holds the rank of Major.

The Distinguished Public Service Award is awarded to selected members of the Indiana General Assembly for their advocacy and dedication to the needs of veterans and service members.
