Entry Description

STATEHOUSE (July 16, 2013) – The Indiana American Legion honored State Sen. Tom Wyss (R-Fort Wayne) with the Distinguished Public Service Award at the organization’s 2013 Department Convention in Indianapolis, Saturday, July 13.

Indiana American Legion Department Commander Richard Jewell said the award honors Wyss’ continued efforts to author and sponsor legislation that improves the lives of Indiana’s veterans.

“We chose to recognize Senator Wyss because of his distinguished and honorable services as a statesman,” Jewell said. “He is a proven leader in the General Assembly and an unwavering advocate for Hoosier veterans and their families.”

Jewell specifically pointed to several legislative milestones advanced by Wyss during the General Assembly’s 2013 legislative session. He authored a resolution urging the Indiana Department of Transportation to name part of I-69 the “Iraq Afghanistan Veterans Memorial Highway” and also authored a new law to make it easier for service members to apply their military skills to an Emergency Medical Services license. He currently serves as chair of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security, Transportation and Veterans Affairs.

Wyss thanked the Legion for its constant encouragement of legislative efforts to support Hoosier veterans.

“The Legion has proven to be a steadfast source of support in the General Assembly’s work,” Wyss said. “Legion officials backed many of the measures we passed this year, and I believe that advocacy made a major difference in our efforts to address veterans’ issues and concerns. I look forward to working with this organization in the future as we continue to find ways to thank our service men and women for their sacrifices.”

This is the second award Wyss has received for his service to veterans this year. In June, the Indiana Disabled American Veterans named Wyss “Legislator of the Year.”

The Distinguished Public Service Award is awarded to selected members of the Indiana General Assembly for their advocacy and dedication to the needs of veterans and service members.
