[DNR] Spring Mill SP celebrates Indiana astronaut Gus Grissom, July 20-21

Visitors to Spring Mill State Park the weekend of July 20-21 can enjoy space-related fun and games as the park celebrates Virgil I. “Gus” Grissom, the United States’ second man in space.

Grissom Days activities include crafts on both days, water-propelled rockets and evening stargazing on Saturday, and a guest speaker on Sunday.

Members of the local astronomy group the StoneBelt Stargazers will bring their telescopes for an evening star party on Saturday, July 20. This event will be at the pool parking lot at 9:30 p.m. Arrive early to make a star craft with the park naturalist

Steve Grissom, a relative of the astronaut, will speak at 2 p.m. on Sunday in the Grissom Memorial Auditorium about manned space flight and Gus’s role in the space program.

Grissom Days commemorates Gus Grissom’s commitment and sacrifice to the space program and coincides with the anniversary of the July 21, 1961, launch of the Liberty Bell 7, which made Grissom the second American to go into space.

Park admission is $5 per in-state vehicle and $7 per out-of-state vehicle. Annual Entrance Passes are also available.
