Entry Description

STATEHOUSE (July 9, 2013) – State Sen. Jim Smith (R-Charlestown) joined Gov. Mike Pence at Hurco Companies Inc. in Indianapolis today to launch the state’s newest workforce-development initiative: the Indiana Career Council.

The council is tasked with bringing education officials, policymakers and industry executives together to coordinate workforce-development strategies for meeting the needs of Indiana’s job market. Smith has been appointed to serve as one of the council’s 16 members.

“One of the most significant issues impacting today’s economy and future job growth is that most Hoosiers in need of work are not equipped with the skills required to fill available jobs in growing, high-tech sectors,” Smith said. “This council is a first step toward bridging the current skills gap and making sure career-prep programs evolve alongside workforce expectations.”

The General Assembly approved the new Indiana Career Council with House Enrolled Act 1002. Smith will be joined on the council by representatives from Indiana’s business, government, labor, education, manufacturing and life sciences communities. Click here to read more about the appointees.

Smith said members of the council will create a strategic plan to increase coordination of all education and workforce-development entities, address gaps in job availability and propose a way to boost Indiana’s leadership in science and math careers.

“This council is a vital investment in Indiana’s future,” Smith said.
