[s31] Sen. Merritt, Gov. Pence Kick-Off Indiana Career Council
Start Date: 7/9/2013Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 7/9/2013
Entry Description
STATEHOUSE (July 9, 2013) – State Sen. Jim Merritt (R-Indianapolis) joined Gov. Mike Pence at Hurco Companies Inc. in Indianapolis today to launch the state’s newest workforce-development initiative: the Indiana Career Council.

The council is tasked with bringing education officials, policymakers and industry executives together to coordinate workforce-development strategies for meeting the needs of Indiana’s job market.

“The Indiana Career Council will help tie career preparation programs to the expectations of employers,” Merritt said. “This is a crucial step to closing the skills gap that is holding many Hoosiers back from attaining today’s open jobs. The council will allow for seamless communication between those who train our workforce and those who hire.”

The General Assembly approved the new Indiana Career Council with House Enrolled Act 1002 this year. Pence named appointees to the 16-member council today, including representatives from Indiana’s business, government, education, manufacturing and life sciences communities. Members of the council will create a strategic plan to increase coordination of all education and workforce-development entities, address gaps in job availability and propose a way to boost Indiana’s leadership in science and math careers.

“With the creation of this council, Indiana is taking a step forward to better compete in the global economy,” Merritt said. “This council will revamp strategies on education, offering hope and expectations to those kids who might not possess that mindset now.”
