Entry Description

STATEHOUSE (July 9, 2013) — Throughout this summer, Hoosier students are preparing for fall sports through training camps and workshops. At the same time, many coaches are meeting to discuss the best practices to keep these young athletes safe. That’s a topic State Sen. Travis Holdman (R-Markle) has taken particular interest in, both inside and outside of the legislature.

Holdman was recently invited to speak to youth football coaches at Heads Up Football’s Player Safety Coach Clinic, held at the Indianapolis Colts Complex. Organized by USA Football – the national governing body of youth and amateur football – Heads Up Football provides comprehensive safety training to more than 2,700 football leagues across the country. Coaches from each league are appointed to attend these clinics, and they, in turn, pass on what they learned to other coaches in their league.

At the event, Holdman shared his thoughts on concussion prevention and other training topics with 40 youth football coaches from across the state. He said programs like Heads Up Football are vital to ensuring that young people enjoy sports to their fullest.

“Most athletic programs take special care to protect their participants, but we need to ensure that safety training is accessible to teams everywhere,” Holdman said. “Proper training can reduce the long-term effects of sports injuries and even prevent them from happening. That’s why it’s so important to foster collaboration and discussion among Indiana’s coaches.”

In the 2013 legislative session, Holdman authored a new law that asks the General Assembly to study methods of addressing concussions and sudden cardiac arrest in student athletes. The legislature’s Commission on Education will take up the topic this summer.

USA Football Executive Director Scott Hallenbeck praised Holdman’s dedication to the issue of youth athlete safety.

“The health and safety of every young football player is USA Football’s number-one priority, and Senator Holdman shares that commitment with us,” Hallenbeck said. “Through our Heads Up Football program, youth and high school athletes across Indiana play a better and safer game with coaches who are trained to teach the sport’s fundamentals and follow CDC-approved concussion education protocols that are needed in every sport. We value Senator Holdman’s continued work and legislation to advance the health and safety of Indiana’s young athletes”
