INDIANAPOLIS—The 2013 INShape Indiana Black and Minority Health Fair commences on Thursday, July 18 and goes to Sunday, July 21 at the Indiana Convention Center, Hall D, in downtown Indianapolis.

The theme for this year’s Health Fair, “Good Health for All Generations,” promotes healthy living by making healthy decisions throughout a person’s entire life, no matter the age. Hoosiers are encouraged to take control and learn more about their health and consider their every day choices which contribute to overall health and well being.

“With so many health problems affecting every age group, we wanted to incorporate a theme that truly reached all generations,” said Antoniette Holt, Director, Indiana State Department of Health Office of Minority Health. “Our intention for the 2013 INShape Indiana Black and Minority Health Fair is that there will be something for everyone and that people will be empowered and inspired to be their own best health advocate.”

Attendees will receive a multitude of free screenings, health information and giveaways. In fact, over $1,000 worth of health screenings will be offered, including blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol, syphilis, HIV (Saturday only), body mass index, prostate, vision and dental.  Additionally, staff will offer body health analysis, stroke assessment and lead testing for children. New this year is hearing and foot screenings.

The opening ceremony is Thursday, July 18 at 3 p.m. and will feature keynote speaker, Chef and author Dr. Timothy Moore. “The Vegan Chef” Moore, once weighing 320 pounds, overcame diabetes and reached a healthy weight after becoming a holistic vegan.  Moore has written three books, of which two discuss health matters.  His 2012 release, “47 Tips to Reverse Your Diabetes,” focuses on nutritional means to control the disease. Moore is also a traditional naturopath doctor, certified nutrition specialist and food consultant.  He will present cooking demonstrations and he will be available to the public for questions throughout the weekend.

The Faith Leaders Symposium on Healthy Living will occur prior to the opening ceremony on Thursday from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Dr. Clyde Posely, pastor of Antioch Baptist Church, will be speaking at the symposium.

The Health Fair is free to attend on opening night, which especially caters to Seniors by offering free transportation to and from the Convention Center, provided by the Family and Social Services Administration. The rest of the Health Fair is included in admission to Indiana Black Expo.

Special guests at the Health Fair include the women’s basketball team, The Indiana Fever, and former NBA All-Star and Hall of Famer Dominique Wilkins on Saturday and Sunday.
