Senator appointed to serve on three interim study councils, commissions

INDIANAPOLIS—State Senator Mark Stoops (D-Bloomington) has been appointed to serve on the Environmental Quality Service Council this legislative interim. The council will study a number of issues facing the state, including water and air quality, coal burning power plants, environmental crimes and conservation efforts. The council consists of the commissioner of the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) as well as fifteen lay members who are appointed by the governor to represent a variety of businesses and industries. The council will hear testimony, provide legislative oversight to IDEM and make legislative recommendations to the General Assembly.

Another interim study group on which Sen. Stoops will serve this summer is the Health Finance Commission. The commission will take up a number of issues dealing with the federal health care reform act. Lawmakers are charged with establishing a health insurance exchange, an online portal where Hoosiers can shop for and compare insurance policies. The commission will also examine the disposal of prescription drugs, biosimiliar biological products, adult and child immunization issues and other topics.

Sen. Stoops has also been appointed to serve on the Compliance Advisory Panel, which will carry out the duties established under Section 507 of the federal Clean Air Act.

These appointments were made by the Senate President Pro Tempore David Long (R-Fort Wayne) upon recommendation of Senate Democratic Leader Tim Lanane (D-Anderson).

The Indiana General Assembly annually convenes interim study committees and permanent commissions to conduct in-depth research and analysis of issues affecting the state. Recommendations from these committees are often the basis for future legislation. More information about committee topics, schedules and agendas is available online at

Sen. Stoops represents Indiana Senate District 40, which includes portions of Monroe County, including the City of Bloomington. For more information on Sen. Stoops, his legislative agenda or other State Senate business call 1-800-382-9467 or visit
