Senator appointed to serve on eight interim study committees, commissions

INDIANAPOLIS—State Senator Earline Rogers (D-Gary) has been appointed to serve on the Commission on Education and is charged with studying a variety of education issues this summer. The commission will study the effects of unprecedented voucher expansion within House Enrolled Act (HEA) 1003 approved last April, teacher preparation programs and other issues such as school absenteeism and recidivism. The commission has already held its first meeting following widespread problems with the administration of ISTEP testing across the state.

Another committee to which Sen. Rogers will serve is the new School Safety Interim Study Committee which was formed during the 2013 session. The committee stems from Senate Enrtolled Act (SEA) 1 and will look to improve safety among the state’s schools and develop best practices for school resource officers hired under the provisions of SEA 1. The act provided schools with grant funding to hire officers to assist with school safety and security.

Sen. Rogers has also been appointed to the Interim Study Committee on Common Core Educational Standards, Education Roundtable, Special Group Recognition License Plates Committee, County Redistricting Commission, Lake Michigan Marina and Shoreline Development Commission, and the Joint Study Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure Assessment and Solutions.

These appointments were made by the Senate President Pro Tempore David Long (R-Fort Wayne) upon recommendation of Senate Democratic Leader Tim Lanane (D-Anderson).

The Indiana General Assembly annually convenes interim study committees and permanent commissions to conduct in-depth research and analysis of issues affecting the state. Recommendations from these committees are often the basis for future legislation. More information about committee topics, schedules and agendas is available online at

Sen. Rogers represents Indiana Senate District 3 which encompasses portions of Lake County. District 3 communities include Gary, Lake Station, New Chicago, Hobart, Ainsworth, Merrillville and Crown Point.
