Senator appointed to serve on eight interim study committees, commissions

INDIANAPOLIS-- State Senator Frank Mrvan (D-Hammond) has been appointed to serve on the Commission on Education, which is charged with studying a variety of education issues this summer. The commission will study the effects of unprecedented voucher expansion within House Enrolled Act (HEA) 1003 approved last April, teacher preparation programs and other issues such as school absenteeism and recidivism. The commission has already held its first meeting following widespread problems with the administration of ISTEP testing across the state.

Another interim group to which Sen. Mrvan has been appointed is the newly created Indiana Career Council. Formed as the result of HEA 1002 approved this past session, the Indiana Career Council is aimed at bringing the state’s participants in the education, job skills development, and career training fields together to give Hoosiers’ the best tools for training and finding work. The council has been charged with creating an inventory of current job and career training activities as well as formulating a strategic plan for the future.

Sen. Mrvan has also been appointed to the Health Finance Commission, Regional Campuses Study Committee, Interim Study Committee on Insurance, Commission on Hispanic/Latino Affairs, Commission on Military and Veterans Affairs and the Indiana Veterans’ Affairs Commission

These appointments were made by the Senate President Pro Tempore David Long (R-Fort Wayne) upon recommendation of Senate Democratic Leader Tim Lanane (D-Anderson).

The Indiana General Assembly annually convenes interim study committees and permanent commissions to conduct in-depth research and analysis of issues affecting the state. Recommendations from these committees are often the basis for future legislation. More information about committee topics, schedules and agendas is available online at http://www.in.gov/legislative/interim.

Mrvan represents Indiana Senate District 1 which includes portions of Lake County. District 1 communities include Hammond, Munster, Highland, Dyer, Schererville and Griffith as well as two precincts in Crown Point. For more information on Sen. Mrvan his legislative agenda or other State Senate business call 1-800-382-9467 or visit www.IN.gov/S1.
