STATEHOUSE (July 1, 2013) — State Sen. Brandt Hershman (R-Buck Creek) joined Gov. Mike Pence and Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) officials today at the grand opening of the Prophetstown State Park Aquatic Center.

The only Indiana State Park outdoor aquatic center with waterpark features, the $6 million facility is the first aquatic center the DNR has opened since 2008. It offers many modern attractions, including water slides, play centers and an aquatic activity area with basketball.

Hershman worked with DNR and Indiana Finance Authority officials for several years to identify funds for construction. He thanked those agencies for their efforts and members of the public for their input.

Battle Ground and Tippecanoe Township residents specifically named access to swimming as a significant concern during public meetings,” Hershman said. “In the summer months, it’s especially important to have a pool as a source of safe, clean recreational activity for families. I expect this new aquatic center to not only satisfy the needs of our community, but also attract new visitors and revenue to Prophetstown State Park.”

Hershman said his prediction is based on the success of similar water attractions. Brown County State Park’s Abe Martin Lodge generated more than $1 million in additional funds during its first year of operation, he said.

Prophetstown State Park opened to the public in fall 2004, offering a 150-site campground, two trails and a 1920s living history site to local residents and out-of-town guests. For more information, visit
