[GOV]GOVERNOR NAMES MEMBERS TO THE COMMISSION FOR HIGHER EDUCATION

INDIANAPOLIS – Today, Governor Pence appointed members to the Indiana Commission for Higher Education (CHE). Effective July 1, 2013, appointees will serve four-year terms, with the faculty trustee serving a two-year term. 

“When it comes to higher education, our administration is focused on making college more affordable and accessible for Hoosiers,” said Governor Pence. “With a shared vision, vast experience, and proven leadership, I am confident the individuals named today to the Commission for Higher Education will strive to make this goal a reality and will serve to benefit thousands of Hoosier students across the state.” 

Co-founder of E&A Industries, Inc., Al Hubbard, of Indianapolis, has been appointed to serve on the Indiana Commission for Higher Education. Founded in 1977, E&A has owned a number of companies in different industries, and Hubbard has served as its Chairman since 1977 except during his government service. Hubbard has served in the White House as Deputy Chief of Staff to Vice President Dan Quayle and Executive Director of the President’s Council on Competitiveness under the George H.W. Bush administration and as Assistant to the President for Economic Policy and Director of The National Economic Council during the George W. Bush administration. A member of the Council on Foreign Relations, Hubbard has also served on a number of for-profit and not-for-profit boards including WellPoint Corporation, Simon Property Group, and PIMCO Equity Series & PIMCO Equity Series VIT. Hubbard earned his undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University, his master’s degree with distinction from Harvard Business School and his law degree from Harvard Law School. 

Mark Holden, of West Lafayette, has also been appointed to the CHE. Recently named Chief Executive Officer and a member of the Board of Directors of A&R Logistics, Inc., a leading provider of dry bulk transportation, packaging, distribution and logistics solutions, Holden has more than 20 years of experience in transportation, distribution and manufacturing. He previously served as President, Chief Executive Officer and Owner of Prime Distribution Services, Inc., named one of the Top 100 Food Logistics Companies in the United States in 2011.  In 2005, Holden joined American Commercial Lines, Inc. as President, Chief Executive Officer and a member of the Board of Directors. From 1992 to 2004, he held various management level positions including time spent in the Office of the Chief Executive, as Senior Vice President-Chief Financial Officer, and in a position on the Board of Directors at Wabash National Corporation. A CPA, Holden spent the first 11 years of his professional career with Arthur Andersen & Co. in Indianapolis. Holden is the 2013 recipient of the Ball State University President’s Medal of Distinction and the2007 Award of Distinction from the University’s Miller College of Business. He graduated cum laude with an undergraduate degree from Ball State University.  

John Popp, of Fort Wayne, has been named to the CHE. Since 1980, Popp has served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Aunt Millie’s Bakeries, Inc. A family company, Aunt Millie’s Bakeries, Inc. was founded in 1901 by Popp’s maternal grandfather and has remained a family business since its inception. A successful real estate developer, he has also worked to develop several large subdivisions in southwestern Fort Wayne.  Popp served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956 as Chief of Review and Analysis Division for Ordinance Training Command at Aberdeen, Maryland. Active within his industry and community, Popp has served on a number of boards including as President of the Allen County Park Board, Chairman of the Independent Bakers Association Board, and for 16 years on the Southwest Allen County School Board. Popp is a graduate of the University of Michigan. 

An Associate Professor of Biology at Purdue University North Central, Jason Curtis, will serve as the faculty representative on the CHE. Curtis, of Valparaiso, has served as a faculty member at Purdue for 13 years, including his current capacity as Academic Program Coordinator, or Assistant Chair, for the Biology/Chemistry Department. Curtis has served in a variety of other roles including Coordinator for Institutional Effectiveness, member of the Faculty Senate for ten years, and representative on the Natural & Physical Sciences panel for Indiana’s Core Transfer Library. Actively involved in advancing science education in northwest Indiana, Curtis has worked as a facilitator for a summer “STEMstitute” held by the Michigan City Area Schools and played a role with the Indiana Department of Education on the Indiana Science 2010 Initiative. He has served for eight years, including five as President, on the City of La Porte’s Historic Preservation Commission. Curtis earned his undergraduate degree from Cal Poly State University and his Ph.D. from Purdue University. 

Susana Duarte de Suarez, of Zionsville, will serve in the at-large position on the Commission. Duarte de Suarez, who formerly served on the board as a representative of the 4th Congressional District, is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Media Moon Communications, a multi-cultural and bilingual marketing and communications company. An elected official, she is currently serving a four-year term as a Councilwoman for the Town of Zionsville. Duarte de Suarez has served in various Vice Presidential and Senior Officer positions with Fortune 500 companies like Holcim, Cemex, and Anheuser-Busch. Duarte de Suarez earned her undergraduate degree from Ohio State University and graduated from the IMD Senior Management program in Lausanne, Switzerland.
