Entry Description

STATEHOUSE (June 27, 2013) — State Sen. Jim Banks (R-Columbia City) today announced that the Indiana Principal Leadership Institute is now accepting applications for its first class, which will begin on July 17.

During the 2013 legislative session, Banks authored a new law – Senate Enrolled Act 402 – that created the Indiana Principal Leadership Institute through Indiana State University’s Bayh College of Education. The Institute will teach new leadership, management and communication techniques to public school principals who enroll in the program.

“A skilled, knowledgeable administrator can make a major impact on the success of a school,” Banks said. “Our state now offers a resource for these principals to get the up-to-date experience they need to be effective leaders and to help their staff and students thrive. This will ultimately create a stronger foundation for our schools.”

Fifty principals are invited to join the two-year program’s first class. Participants will be required to attend five seminars each year and will have the opportunity to interact with established educators in their communities. The curriculum focuses on developing and implementing personal and school improvement plans, facilitating action research projects and building a network with other administrators to gain support beyond the Institute.

“The ultimate goal of the Indiana Principal Leadership Institute is to improve schools,” said Steve Gruenert, Chair of Educational Leadership at the Bayh College of Education.  “Using an approach that is collaborative, research-based and results-oriented, we have a tremendous opportunity to take the skills of our Hoosier educators to the next level, which will have a significant impact on children of our state.  With the institute, we intend to structure the best professional development program for principals in the nation.”

Principals interested in applying for the first class should apply online at  A one-time financial contribution of $1,000 from the school corporation is required for participation, as it cements both the commitment of the principal and superintendent to the program.  Nominating a principal implies the superintendent and school board think the principal has to potential to improve their school, are supportive of positive change in the school and will allow data collection to occur.
